Anything you might want to know about LCD monitors you can find in The LCD Thread over at the anandtech forums in the first post, and the second post has recommended models for specific uses (recommended based on suitability to task NOT price.)

You don't list where you're located, but Newegg has a 'black friday LCD sale' running until the 29th. Nothing stellar (no IPS/PVA panels) but everything is serviceable and has decent prices.

I was just looking through the ads and didn't see any super spectacular monitor deals... some were ok...

Are you planning on going dual or single monitor? and are you using standard (4:3) or Widescreen (16:9) format?

I bought a 28" Hanns-G (Who cares) LCD for 299.00 and f-f-f-free shipping from newegg.com in September.

Love it to death.

Honestly, as big as you can fit and/or afford. I've never been at the DAW and wished the monitor was smaller. Dual screen is highly recommended, more bang for the buck. Tend to prefer widescreen as well. Have been pretty happy with my Acer in a dual screen setup. They are inexpensive and work fine for DAW use. Most of the name brands should be fine though. Check them out in person to see what you prefer.

Buy an LED screen you will not regret it. Forget LCD.

Notwithstanding the fact that LED screens are in fact LCD screens that use diodes for backlighting....

CCFL backlit LCD's are still very nice... LED backlit LCDs tend to be a little nicer when it comes to color contrast... LED backlit screens are newer so you'll pay a premium....
The do make actual LED screens but unless you're Jerry Jones
(Dallas Cowboys owner who put an LED screen in the new stadium that consists of over 10 million LED lights) you're probably not looking into that
Samsung is my personal favorite for LCD but Mr Cheese loves Acer citing it is a better value.... Same has been said for Asus monitors...
just remember... anything over 19" and you'll wanna use 1920X1080 or 1920x1200 resolutions and anything over 30" and you'll wanna use 2560x1600

Something with high resolution in not too ridiculous a screen size.

WUXGA is a good resolution spec (1920 x 1080 pixels).

I got a 24" one for £180 - it's got nearly a many pixels as the 2 17" screens I had before put together (they were 1280 x1024)
It's widescreen (great for editing, and seeing lots of mixer channels at once), and doesn't take up too much room between the monitors (far less in width than my two 17s, and just a couple inches more in height). Okay, for more money I could have bought a better quality screen, but size wise it's spot on - to be honest even quality wise, I'm in front of mine for about 10 hours a day tracking mixing and editing on Cubase and it's been great to work with for the past year or so.

For price and performance 23" and 24" monitors are a great way to go... Really big screens but not super expensive these days and at 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 they look great
Obviously if you wanna go bigger than go for it.. but I think $200 - $250 is a good price range

Assuming your mobo or video card can handle it, go as big as you want, and make sure you have two in the end. It's just better for productivity (meters + plugins on one side, tracks on the other) and earns you nerdy points.

Started out using dual 17" Acers, then moved to a 40" Series 4 Samsung LCD tv, took a week to get used to but after that I was in love. Since then I did move down to a 24" LG. Samsung make fantastic panels though. I'm pretty sure they supply Sony. My vote is for Samsung. But Acer do their job very well at that price point.
