Confusion: Separate drive for audio

Have been confused about this for a while.

I have always recorded audio and installed samples on a separate drive, not the system drive.

However, it seems this is only beneficial when recording many audio tracks at the same time, eg, tracking drums/band.
I rarely record audio and that too a stereo track at most. My arrangements can have upto 40 tracks, but they play back from a stereo output.

For my new system, should i still get a separate drive for audio and samples ?

There is a chance i might be able to buy a new QuadCore iMac, wanted to keep the FW port for an audio interface and use the internal 2TB drive.

What do u suggest ?

You can daisy chain FW devices. Depending on the interface, you'll have to figure out which order to do it, but I believe as a rule, you can do 4-6 FW devices on a standard FW 400 port. I've never done more than 2, Digi 002 and a HD, but would be fun to try.
