Unhappy Apogee Duet ringing distortion

Hi guys

Just taken delivery of an Apogee Duet second hand from a fellow gearslut and it has a terrible distorted ring to it through the monitors, through the headphone it's fine but it's unusable with my monitors,
I've tried moving it around, changing cables, turning off my computer screen and unplugging everything else near by but the awful distorted ringing doesn't stop

i have an apogee duet and with most certain awareness i can tell you that "terribly ringing destortion" is not a feature it comes with.

Exclamation

Ok I've found a solution but I don't know if it's the right one, I've turned the gain down on my Tascam VL-X5 from full to half, I needed the extra gain from the headphone out on my mac mini but with the both the output meters set to 0 on the Maestro control I can set the gain to half on the monitors, and I get an much lower ground noise and no ring with similar loudness to the full volume headphone out on my macmini when playing my tracks

Does the duet have output preamps for passive speakers and or is the duet just exposing flaws in my monitors/electrical enviroment?
