Why is Line 6 giving away PodFarm?

I owned PodFarm before, but had to use their dongle. So I was very happy to get a free iLok version of it. BUT WHY ARE THEY GIVING IT AWAY?

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy to get good free software. But I don't understand what THEY have to gain.

Is this their attempt at just capturing market share, so people don't buy other amp sim plugins, and they hope that Line 6 will be the last man standing. Maybe they have something SO incredible, and SO revolutionary coming out, that PODFarm will be obsolete???

Thoughts???

If the folks at Line 6 are well thought out at all (an assumption which, unfortunately, I'm starting to have very strong doubts about), my guess would be that they will have a revamped version of PODFarm Platinum lined up to release as soon as the free PODFarm promotion is over and that maybe the plan is to create a wider possible market for upgrades to the new version.

I never used POD products before. I tested it today and for me there is enough "sounds" to select and to use. Sounds good but prefer Eleven Full. Less plastique... still not the real thing.

During the month of September 2009, users with an iLok USB Smart Key or a compatible Line 6 product can download the (normally $99) software at no charge.
So, you have to have an iLok or a compatible Line 6 software package, yeah?

My guess is that there's more interest in selling POD hardware than software, or maybe they've lost most of their market share are are trying to get it back.

IK is selling their Amplitube packages rather cheaply as well, Logic comes with its own package, DP7 comes with its own package, PT comes with its own package...

The market has changed, so have everyone's policies.

It's not reduced (per se) but it's the base level version. Still LOTS of great stuff in it. Then they sell expansion packs on top of that... Unless you already owned them.

And it's iLok only.

Maybe they're just trying to sell expansion packs???

I took Line 6 up on the "free" offer. I like it, but it does not include all the models. I am now contemplating an upgrade to the full featured version since it is $199 to upgrade instead of $299 to buy it from scratch.

That's most likely why they made this offer ...

I think the reason is SALES.

What do you get with free Pod Farm? Well, you get a whole bunch of guitar tones and amp sims....but what ELSE do you get?

You get a whole sh*tload of OTHER tones and amp sims that you see every time you use the damn thing, but you can only use them if you upgrade to Pod Farm Platinum.

So they'll probably rake in some cash that way. Most of the people who got it for free weren't shopping for it anyway, so the company just seduced a whole lot of new people, and impressed them with kindness. They're sales will probably spike.

In this economy, ya gotta give if ya wanna get.

If I already have all the expansions, and I get this free Podfarm, does that mean I basically get Podfarm Platinum and don't have to use my Podxt as a dongle anymore?

Why not try it and report back - after all it's free!

No it does not. If your iLok and PODxt are plugged in at the same time, PODFarm will look to the iLok license for authorization, which will mean you will lose access to your add-on packs unless you unplug your iLok and instantiate the PODFarm plug, which of course, would mean you'd lose access to most of your other plugs. I don't think Line 6 has resolved this stupidity yet, so I would get the license if you want but not deposit it on your iLok until they change the authorization window into a pull-down menu.

I never used their products before, but I'm mighty impressed with some (not all) of the sims. Their stuff really is good. I very much appreciate the free download.
