Tiger to Snow - What a Difference !!!

I just wanted to share. For anyone still using Tiger and Logic 8. Switch ... NOW !!!! I don't know if this difference is in 10.5, since I went straight from 10.4 to 10.6, but anyhow ... All of my plugins work, no problems there, but the thing that I'm tripping out about is the efficiency. I was maxing out my processors on just about every track. it would stop several times through a single playback just due to cpu spikes. Now not only is it all gone, but holy shit !!! What used to be 3/4 to full cpu load is at less than 1/4. I just can not believe how much juice I have just after switching from 10.4 to 10.6. Does anyone else have a similar ( or oposite) experience to share, please post.
Oh yeah, I have an early Intel Mac Pro with dual 2.66 ( not quad :-() chips) just for extra info.

... man am I stoked !!

I'm wondering if ClusterF#%$s is a term from Catch22.
I guess there's more room for the program to move in, less waiting around, larger neck on the bottle. Is Logic 8 optimized for 64 bit?

That's interesting. I recently made the switch from Tiger to Leopard, in preparation for Logic 9.... Then I decided Logic 9 wasn't ready for 'prime time' and it's been sitting on the desk for 3 weeks.

But for the most part I'm really unimpressed with Leopard and wish I'd stayed on Tiger. Leopard seems way slower, and it's always spooling stuff to the hard drive, even though I've got 12 gigs of ram. It's as if there's a constant virtual memory system running that just won't leave the hard drive alone, and basic Finder activities are much much slower than they ever were in Tiger.

Here's hoping Snow Leopard feels more like a step forward instead of back. Thanks for the window of hope!

I'm using a Mac Pro version 1.1 with two dual 2.66 processors and 7 gigs of ram. One other difference is I put a new hard drive in. I figure that this may have something to do with the speed increase, but the increase was so big I hardly think it could only be due to a newer bigger and faster drive. I had a 300 GB Maxtor 7,200 RPM with 8MB cache. Now I have a new WD Caviar Black 1TB with 16MB cache.

Also, 1 negative I found so far. Logic sometimes hangs and locks up when shutting down. Sometimes even when loading new projects, but this is not so common ... yet ? It has not, however, crashed once while I was working. That area is working very nicely so far. I'll keep you posted as I go along.

I can't say anything about Leopard. I do have it installed on my internet computer and I thought it was rather sluggish in comparison to tiger, but, in all fairness that's a G4 mac mini.

There is something wrong somewhere.. that is absolutely not normal behaviour.

Well, what can I say? The system was pretty solid and 'normal', then I installed Leopard and it got slower -- which is what I'd heard rumours of in a few places (though mostly talking about earlier builds of Leopard). Not glacially slower. But definitely less snappy. I even re-installed with the 'combo' update to see if that would make a difference. None.

Logic runs about the same as it used to. But I'm guessing the increase in hard drive activity may have to do with a different approach/strategy to journaling in Leopard.

Who knows? If anyone has any trouble shooting tips, I'd be glad to hear'em.

Did you do a fresh install or upgrade from 10.4?

Well She it ! There goes that. I am having some issues after all. I played through quite a few tracks with out a problem, but I eventually started getting some major glitches. I believe these are due to 3rd party plug ins, but I'm not sure. I basically get a a drop out and the infamous spinning wheel for about 5 seconds and then it kicks back on. It wasn't until I started adding several effects to a new aux that I got this issue. They were almost all 3rd party plugs. I suspect the buffer override, but I'm not quite sure yet. Trying to repeat the problem.

:-(
