With my 1,1 2.66 original (vintage) Mac Pro
I had an extra 320 gig drive free, did a super duper clone of 10.5.8, then pulled the main drive. rebooted to SL 10A432 boot disk, did the super simple update, rebooted a couple of times.
Ran Logic 9, opened 4 songs , 3 done in Logic 8 1 done in 9, all worked fine.
I see no gains or loss's. Runs the same for me as Leopard.
My machine boots in 32 bit Kernel and Logic 9 is still 32 bit.
What we really need is Logic 9 to run in 64 bit so we can use lotsa ram.
Until then personally it seems like there is no reason to update, or rather, no reason not to update as there seems to be no difference.
All 3rd party plugins are running.
So as always do a backup (super duper is free) and a 250 gig drive can be had for hardly anything. Give yourself an hour and try it.
If it sucks then go back and wait a month for an update.

later
Brian

I won´t upgrade until everything is 64bit, I mean EVERYTHING!!! The plugins, VST instruments and so on...

But the plugin developers are so freaking lazy doing 64bit versions it´s killing me!

I'm going to buy the update now since it's only 25 bucks, but I will wait and make sure it's cool before I install it

We seem to have entered a phase where the available hardware has become vastly more powerful than the software that's supposed to drive it... TBH, I never suspected such a situation could ever occur, but there we are.

Our MacBook Pro running Logic and Leopard 10.5.6 works ok... except it completely drops the MIDI Out for no repeatable, consistent or obvious reason mid-song during live performance from time to time (only ever MIDI Out though - Audio Out via FW Interface and MIDI IN remain stable)

If some Snow fixes that, then I'm in

I plan to upgrade ASAP since I want to take advantage of the 16 exabytes of RAM which I recently purchased.

Mr cautious here - I just now upgraded to leopard and had to lose some plugs that won't work with intel - Wizoo W2 being one of them. I haven't been too terribly impressed with Apple lately - I thought Tiger was a better OS honestly. Although I might buy SL for the current deal, I doubt I'll install it until software developers have had a chance to catch up.

I did the pre order yesterday and plan on installing it Friday. I'm in between projects so it's a good time for me.

Adobe Users

One of the few Pro App companies I've found to have released any official statement about SL compatibility is Adobe. I thought this might be useful as a reference to some of my fellow GS:

What interests me in Snow Leopard is OpenCL, I hope developers take advantage of this.
Imagine running out of juice in your machine and your plugin had an OpenCL option to get the power from one of your video cards, that would be fantastic.

Let us know how it goes I have the same machine here and am still running Logic 8 until 9 is more solid. But interested to see if there are any improvements in performance with Logic etc.

tried to install last release candidate and changed back to 10.5.8.

AU validating utility in Logic 9 crashed with some plugins (I have a lot of plugins and some of them stayed disabled), noticed some graphic issues, no performance improvement. Wait for first bigger update...

That's not entirely true. My Mac Pro (1,1) 2.66 dual shipped with Leopard, but it was before Leopard was working with PT. I tracked down restore discs for a Mac Pro that shipped with Tiger (same specs) and was able to roll back to Tiger for the 2 or so months I needed to.

If the model you own shipped with a previous OS, it will work. It must be the exact same model though (spec-wise).
