Best EQ plug in?

The reason why I'm posting this here is the fact that some of these plugs indeed are "high end" - at least in price.. ;-)

I found the Sony Oxford EQ to be excellent. Unfortunately it's not available in AU format, which I use for Logic Pro 7.

I'm looking at URS too, seems very good. Quite expensive if you want the bundle though, some $2.300.

I've used Waves plugins for years but I need something better - in AU format.

Any suggestions or comments appreciated.

Hello Comrade,

If you can get the Hydra Tone Plugin by Tritone Digital that would be my first recommendation. It is inexpensive (relative to the others) and sounds great. URS plugins are pretty good... GML makes their own EQ, and if you can get past the way it looks, it sounds great. Also, cheaper then Sony.

The Oxford eq is availiable as an audiounit using the Tc powercore with the latest drivers. The new Tc audio unit wrapper is logic 7 compatiable and note that with the powercore you get some great reverbs & chorus and lots of extra power.

I'm a big fan of the MDW (GML) TDM EQ ..

Sounds so good I don't care that it doesn't look "sexy"

Thanks but a few of the mentioned ones aren't AU or requires additional hardware (Powercore, UAD).

The Massenburg is TDM only, and the GML option for the Sony is TDM only (last I heard).

The Hydratone is f'ing lovely for a plugin, and available in AU. CPU hog, so it's not the kind of EQ you're gonna be running ten at a time of.

So you'll need the 'N' and 'A' series URS plugins. You can get 'em for $150/month with their great rent-to-own plan... doesn't raise the price in the end.

If you have an iLok you can demo all the URS plugins. Do yourself a favor and demo them two at a time, and overlap 'em at the end of each demo. There's just too many of 'em now to keep 'em straight in your head if you run all the demos at once.

Oxford & GML.

Also, I always try to "mix it up" in ITB mixing. Jon Brion said that each plug-in imparts a certain 'grain' onto each track. I try to avoid using the same plugs across-the-board.

Renaissance EQ is still great, and the graphical interface is nice.

First of all, let me say that I think there is very few good plugin eq's working at base rate. I think only the oxford, waves lin eq and q-clone hold up to be honest.

At high sr rates though, I absolutely love the URS s-series. That's my favourite.
Waves ren eq can be good too, if you know how to perform it's tricks.

Sonalksis is good too.

Seriously, if I didn't get the whole URS package howabout just the S series? (I'd need to get an iLok first though).

And the reason why I'm moving this is that no matter how high end it is still software.

And if one line .... then at least that one.

That said : I use both Oxford and URS plugins.

Thanks

I have and have used URS, Tritone and Sony - the Sony's get used most here. URS are great SUPER quick to use, the Hydra has got a great kind of ooomph in the low mid and low end but I keep returning to the Sony.

If I were you I'd pick up a second hand powercore - possibly you can even find one that has already been authorized for the Sony eq (or some of the other stuff which is very nice as well). The plug-in world is fickle and some people see the Sony's as yesterdays news which means that you might be able to pick them up cheaply.

The S series is the one in there that I don't like at all (FWIW).

I thought it was just me. Kinda dry and (dare I say) thin? At least compared to the other URS. I'd also buy the Fultec, but I have the UAD thingy and there's a nice Pultec-y plugin there. I remember liking the Fultec, though.

I think the current obsession with "the best" of anything and everything is a futile exercise in tail-chasing.

You only have to trawl through these boards for 10 minutes to realise that there are as many different opinons as there are choices - there is simply no "best".

FWIW, my current 'go-to' EQ plug-in is the $129 Elemental Audio Eqium - I like the transparent sound, the logical interface and the hassle-free installation, but I wouldn't pass judgement on whether it's "the best" as everyone's intended application and operational preferences are vastly different.

I suggest you download some demo versions and start trying them out for yourself.

Well said. Just like the best reverb, compression, limiting, mic pre, etc. Yes there are some that generaly dont work well with anything, but the stuff mentioned here is all mostly high end and to a degree it depends on what kind of "flavor" you want and what works best with your particular style of song.

So if you want the "best", go out and buy every plug mentioned above and you should feel good.....until at least something new comes out next month that is the current rave.

I've grown found of the built in Masterworks EQ in DP. I really like the real time frequency analyzer for helping me notch out problem frequencies. Don't know what other native plugs have this feature but I'm sure some of them do.

Another vote for the GML EQ

There is literally no way to make that EQ sound bad

I track with a Neve 1073 so a Neve EQ plugin is unnecessary for me.

I like the S series URS a TON. Just like on the hardware, it sounds best when you turn the bandwidths all the way to the right (making it wide like the Neve)... The low end is very chunky and it sounds great on drums, the filters are great.. Its very authentic sounding, I could duplicate my Midas XL 42 eq with it perfectly.

My opinion exactely. Plus it handles boosting around 450 to 500 pretty well.
