Air EQ deserves a try, though you need a syncrosoft dongle for using it (there is a dongle-less demo).

AngelTone is also well worth considering and is even cheaper and better sounding and doesn't need hardware or dongles. But you need to have pluggo installed in order to run it.

How's the cpu hit for Angeltone. I had the impression that it was mainly directed at mastering. Is the difference from Aireq quality or flavor.

The CPU hit is there. Bigger than with HydraTone. But on these new Intel machines, especially when Pluggo will be optimised, this won't be so drastic. On my PB 1,67GHz I can only run several of them (4 or 5, I think).

The character is not only different from AirEQ, but very different between the four models inside AngelTone. AirEQ is a great eq but I like AngelTone better. Having both is extraordinary for me. Add PSP Neon HR for a very clean eq and you're done.

chrisj...I really like your free plugs. I know you are offering others at affordable costs, but I still wish there were some way to demo them. I've been using channel on my 2 buss and it really brings things together nicely. Thanks

Good sounding stuff, chrisj. Makes me wish Pro Tools supported AU. Maybe it will in version 8.

These are certainly interesting, but with no demos, no gui, no metereing, only one format and very limited functionality per plug-in - I don't think they're for me.

It looks like you'd end up spending several hundred dollars to get all of them. I'd like to see more of the seperate functions rolled into single plugs.

- bravo for what you've done, though.

I'm really happy right now with the EQ in Wave Arts TrackPlug, AngelTone, AirEQ and the EQ's that come with Logic Pro and Pro Tools.

I wish BIAS would get their plug update done so they would run in other apps. Their EQ's are decent.

Everything from Tritone Digital, lots and lots of flavours!
I don't like transparent eq's.
I love color; the more, the better!
I think Waves API is really good also, going to buy them soon.
Waves SSL doesn't cut it, however, SSL-Duende is another story.
I'm very curious about all those new neve-eq's from UAD, never heard them yet.

URS CSP

URS Channel Strip Pro .. great EQ models and possibilities. I still tend to go to the URS A and N a lot, but CSP for my "get your hands dirty" moments.

MDW and Sony are also very fine of course, but I find the URS more agressive, less transparent, and for what I'm doing it's what I need. Bite!

Not to mention, it includes some great compression models.

I use TDM & RTAS and own 90% of everything out there.

Waves API - in lots of ways these are my very favorite. Some of the sweetest top end boost in the box. The 560 is fantastic. But they are not surgical and don't do what you need from a parametric.

Waves V series - they have a really wide Q and sound very big and warm in the mids. Great for kicks, basses, guitars.

Waves SSL - very solid and smooth sounding. A SSL E series never sounded this smooth.

URS Channel Strip Pro - a really useful program EQ with great color. Will not do tight notching.

URS Fulltec - soft and warm. Q control is subtle at best. Great for vocals.

MDW EQv2 - this is my favorite EQ for vocal automation. It sounds great, and all five bands will go to any frequency.

Sonnox - hard, aggresive, & versatile.

UAD Pultec - I have the TDM version, and I love it. Sweet tippy top and wide bottom.

McDSP FilterBank - workhorse EQ. Sounds great and distorts nice.

Sonalksis - great all around, versatile and smooth, almost soft sounding. No TDM.

I like the TriTone sound, but they don't play nice with ProTools delay compensation.

If I had to keep it to an absolute minimum, I would have Waves API, URS Channel Strip Pro, & MDW EQv2.

The TriTone ClassicTone 56 API simulation is very impressive. Just adding the smallest boost on a lead vocal tonight made a huge difference in clarity without ripping your head off.

The AIR EQ is nice also. I do find that by the time I get the vocal present enough with it, it starts to border on sounding harsh.

The SSL EQ is pretty wonderful.

The WAVES API was the all around best for me EQing a lead vocal.

I think between the WAVES API and the graphic Tritone I'd be done...

Voxengo Gliss - A dynamic, versatile EQ - Bit of a chameleon - can do a lot of things for you

Voxengo Harmonieq - Lovely Filters - in Linear Phase it can be as clean as you want - Great on the 2 bus

UAD Pultec/Pultec Pro - Mojo, Mojo, Mojo - This one has me "sprung" right now - Probably overusing currently but I just can't get enough of those "creamy" mids and fat, round lows

EQ choices

ON TOPIC: I like the WAVEARTS stuff and you can check out a demo. Also PSP EQs are nice.

OFF TOPIC:

>I'll second the Masterworks EQ in DP. I wish they'd make a TDM version for >PT.

MOTU used to sell their pure dsp algorithm for Pro Tools. Anyone remember that? Still, short of MX4 and Mach Five I don't think MOTU is going to be making any plugins for Pro Tools anytime soon. Overall I think MOTU includes a nice suite of plugins, although they're desperately due for an overhaul. I've always felt that the suite included in Pro Tools was pretty lackluster... no flanger, no chorus, no phaser... although it cool they include BF1176. Anyway... way off topic... sorry.

There's never been a better time for plugin EQs

-Tritone

-Algorithmix

-Voxengo Curve EQ, Gliss EQ

-Sonnox

-UAD

-Timeworks EQ V1/V1-LP

Lots of great stuff for different budgets.

Is there really that much audible difference in just EQ plug-ins? Besides have better control I'm not sure if I have heard a difference between say a waves EQ plug-in and the basic EQ in Cubase.

I have Angeltone for a year. At least on the mac, nothing comes close (except for the flux eq, which is different but not better imo).

I like the UAD Helios and UAD Pultec Pro

How do the Waves API and Tritone API compare to the real deal?
