External Hardrive and Ptools...must be clean/no files?

i open protools, create "new session," and then it says where do you want to save it, and i say to my lacie, firewire ext. hard drive and then....error message...."session must be on an audio record volume...if permitted set the volumes to R."

Does the external hdrive have to be clean/brand new (without any files on it)? can i Not use a firewire drive i already have with little on it?

to do anything to my lacie, firewire ext. hard drive, it says i will need to re format it. is there a way around this, or do i need a whole new ext drive?

it will allow me to record to the computer's hard drive and then dump to the external, but i want to be recording directly to the ext. drive.

also, when i check my ext. hardrive (based on some posts), it mentions it should be journaled and mac os extended." mine computer hard drive is! to make the ext one this way, does it need to be re formatted?

No it doesn't need to be clean, but need to be compatible.
Generally the drive should have oxford chipset, be it firewire 400 or 800.
It should be osx extended journaled (format).
If those are fine, than launch pro tools, go to workspace window, and adjust the little letters next to your drive's name to Record audio drive (v=video, t=transfer), so you get the idea. If the change ends with some error message, than your drive is not compatible, see above.

What format is the exteral drive? If it's not HFS, you should reformat it
to be HFS .. Protools (on a Mac) will be much happier.

see

Applications->Utilties->Disk Utility

this page is pretty good to follow
Formatting & Partitioning a Hard Drive in OS X

Although you probably don't need to make 2 partitions (as they
instruct) .. one will likely suffice.

Have you actually tried setting the drives to be a record volume? go to workspace in PT ...change where it says "T" or "P" to "R" - that should be it.

Now...sometimes this still doesn't work. I had a problem with this the other day...turns out re-initialising it sometimes just doesn't work - if this is the case, you need to re-partition it as "apple partition map" instead of "GUID" Some drives are now coming as GUID partitioned (for intel machines)...these can't be used as a record volume on PPC machines! IF you can't set the drive to "R" under workspace, this could be the solution.

Of course, all your important data is backed up anyway...right?

If he's running PT8, it's been my experience that the filesystem is the
most likely culprit of getting an A/V drive to flip to R. Used to be dust
on the enclosure would flip the mode .. ;-)

Right...although if the GUID thing is set, it won't ever be able to be set to R! I found that one out through bitter experience...
