Is it just me or does everybody and their dog have problems with those drives?

99.999999% of people have problems with these drives...go with Glyph GT series firewire drives. As far as data recovery if you are on a mac Retrospect might do the trick.

Drive 10 might help also, but if it's physical damage to some part of the drive mechanism itself, you may be screwed. Drive 10 and those kind of programs only help if there's damage to a directory, etc... and only sometimes work.

For firewire drives, I recommend getting an Ice Cube 800 firewire enclosure (OWC has them) and buying a Seagate 7200 rpm drive. Put it together yourself. It's a little more expensive, but I've had no problems with mine.

If that drive is under warranty, or even if it's not, I would contact LaCie and arrange to send it to them. If it's physically damaged, but the directory is okay, they might be able to retrieve the data for you.

LaCie gone off line

We had issues with our D2 not being found on bootup and I found if you unplug the power supply line from the unit for 30 secs and then re plug it in it will reset and come up running. It seems unplugging it isn't the same as switching it off. I tried switching if off and restarting time and again with no results. It would work with the USB port but not the firewire port. After I unplugged it and restarted it came up working fine.

I have owned 4 LaCie d2's in the past 3 years. Never had a problem ever. Been using LaCie drives since about 1996 (SCSI). Never a problem. Love my d2's, they're the best drives ever.

Sorry to hear others have had issues but in my circle of colleagues, we all use d2's and never a problem.

I've owned 6 D2s all used regularly and lost one in an unrecoverable situation (used a very reputable company to try ). My brother has run 4 of these drives in his studio. He lost one the same way. 20% failure rate in my experience - used to recommend them but not anymore. It seems the culprit is the Western Digital drives that they use (or used), I learned this from the data recovery tech who worked on my drive. That company has a special page on their website devoted to these drives because they see so many in for recovery. I started swopping out the Western Digitals for 200gbs Seagates one by one inside my D2s as the casing/interface board is fine.

Bottom line - avoid Lacie D2. Kestral please make sure your data is backed up, your luck may run out someday soon,

cheers,
Ruairi

Thanks for the heads up. Back up always.

Lately it's become a huge pain in the rear end because I have project folders that go above the 4.7 GB limit for DVD. Going to get a dual layer DVD drive at some point soon to make backups easier.

The new Toast 7 really helps with the ability to span DVD's too.

This thread couldn't have come at more ironic time for me. I just spent about 12 hours today trying to troubleshoot with one of these drives not mounting up. I even put it in a new enclosure, no dice. Tried putting the hard drive inside my computer, no dice. The thing just decided on day it didn't want to mount, it hadn't been dropped or anything out of the norm. The power light would flicker and that was all it would do. I know the drive has got to still work, because literally it sat in the same spot, never even being moved, and then it just didn't work.

Def don't touch Lacie D2's or big disks. Mine refused to mount after only one nights use.I know too many people that have lost entire projects because of these drives randomly stopping working, even when they have been put away correctly etc. Very scary when that could have been your entire backup drive gone for no reason! I bought glyph drives instead and they have been fantastic.

Try Disk Warrior to recover corrupt directories, has had a 100% success rate for me so far but obviously it can't sort out mechanical failure. Also i heard that if you put your damaged drive in the freezer overnight that there is a good chance you'll be able to recover the data.

Sounds like the drive doesn't work, despite your wishes to the contrary.

Though you might want to double check the addressing termination (master/slave/cable select) because the interfaces in the enclosures sometimes have different requirements along these lines.

Sometimes stuff just fries of its own accord. For enough money the data could probably be recovered (by swapping the electronics.)

Drives are so cheap these days that there's no excuse for not backing up daily to an external HD. And when they croak, throw 'em in the trash and buy a new one (at half the price per GB that you paid for the last one.)

The drive actually worked for a little bit today. I was able to get some files off of it. Believe me, I made sure the jumper settings were correct for each situation.
