Will windows xp plugins (vst and/or Dx) work in windows 7 without upgrade?

Hi all,

Maybe someone here knows this:

- Will Win XP plugins require an update to work in the forthcoming Windows 7?

I'm talking about VST and DX format.

I know I will have to get new drivers for audio interfaces etc, but what about
plugins when (if?) upgrading to Win 7?

Anyone know about this?

(main reason for an upgrade to Win 7 is my interest in using
more available RAM)

32 bit (x86) plugins should work in 32 bit W7 (or Vista).

32 bit (x86) VST plugins should work in W7 x64 or Vista x64 with a wrapper (BitBridge, jBridge, etc.). 32 bit DX plugins will not work in x64 OS or software.

Aight, thanx.

But if I decide to go the 32-bit-windows-7-way - I will still not be able to adress more RAM than with Windows XP, ? So if upgrading to Windows 7 - one should really go direct to Windows 7 64 bit?

That sounds about right.

If your computer, audio interface, and host software are x64, they should work much better on an x64 OS than on an x32 OS.

Sampler and convolution plugins are examples of plugins that might benefit from larger amounts of RAM, and as an example Kontakt is now x64. Reverberate and SIR2 are convolution plugins that are x64.

From my experience, most X86 plugins work fine wrapped with BitBridge in SONAR, including UAD-1 plugins. A few, like Drumcore3, haven't worked well.

I've gone from XP to win7 32 bit and for the most part, running better than ever. Even if the ram limit's are the same, things are running more smoothly for me (less crashes, quiker response... etc). Most plugin's will work good, hardware may be an issue but chances are good most common devices will work.

I fear upgrading to 64 bit however because of further software inconpatibility. If anyone else recommends it would like to hear about it.

Any Updates on which XP VST plugins are working well in Windows 7 (32 and 64 Bit) and which ones aren't?

That's somewhat reassuring...

I'd seriously hate to give up the Timeworks EQ and CompressorX that came with Sonar Pro 2 (which ironically use 64 bit internal math )... and right now is not the right time to try to get me to spend any money on making music...

Honest to gosh, I'm happy sticking with what I have right now (XP running on an extremely modest P4 2.8HT -- which runs great and does everything I want -- touch wood.)

But, you know, another ten or twenty years and I might be forced to upgrade...
