Clicks & pops between applications

When I'm changing between two programs for playback monitoring, e.g. windows media player and cubase, I get a little click or pop in my active monitors. Is this normal?

When I shut down the computer, if I don't turn them off first then I get a rather large pop. Is that normal?

You should shut off your monitors anytime you're making changes to the core audio. It seems those things always put out some kind of a spike. If you have some kind of volume controller between the interface and the monitors (or on the interface even) you can just mute it or turn it down.)

I've learned to shut them off when shutting down because my old computer used to do that. However, this new computer I have has small clicks between applications and I never heard that before so I'm wondering if it is common.
