Thread Starter | Logic 9 Academic
Anyone have any good sources or prices of L9 Academic? I bought L8 from University Computers in Boston for $150. But I can't seem to access their website. I kind of spread the word about them. Maybe they became inundated or just changed their policy of selling outside of their university system.
Buying a new academic at that price is a no brianer over upgrading. You have to prove you're a student or teacher.

When Logic 8 came out I was still in school and one of my professors was in constant communication with Apple about various things and the price of the academic version of Logic was an annoying topic. Apparently the academic price for students is $449, $50 off retail. But institutions can get the program for $249. I have heard about people getting Logic for $249 from their college bookstores. In all honesty, it seems that there is not really a set academic price...and if there is, not all places are abiding by it or they are just confused.

The did change their policy about selling outside the university.
I tried to buy Logic 8 from them a while ago, and they declined the order and said they were only accepting orders from folks who went to that university.

I bought logic studio, not express, at my college store for $169 I think. That was about 8 months ago. The last time I checked, maybe a month ago, I think it was $149. The college website hasn't updated to logic 9 yet, but when they do I'll post the price for comparison.

I bought Logic 8 Education £118.00(Academic) the day BEFORE Logic 9 became available :-(
I had Logic 8 with the shrink wrap off (delivered in 24hrs), when i saw that Logic 9 was out...W.T.F.
I purchased from the Apple Store U.K. online.
When i contacted them they offered me a further £30 discount OR a full replacement to Logic 9 ....... I took Logic 9
The info i have is that there is NO upgrade path from Logic 8 Education (Academic) to Logic 9. You have to purchase Logic 9 again (£118.00)
By the way, i also found out (thanks to interwebs) that Logic 9 ships with NO hard copies of the Logic Manuals... it comes with an update booklet and html on the DVD.
The Manual is available to purchase from the Apple store (20 or 30 Dollars i think)
With this info i contacted them again and asked if i could keep the Manuals from the Logic 8 packaged box (as i had opened it)
No problem, was the reply
What a difference a Day makes.
Also there is a Store in the U.K. selling Logic 9 at the same £118 Apple Logic Studio 9 - EDUCATION PRICE
As i purchased from the Apple Store online, i would think this applies Worldwide.

Reason: Edit.. in another thread a poster states that the new Logic 9 does NOT come with PDF manuals.... rather html :-(

Yes, there is no upgrade path for Academic versions. You get the incremental updates, but not the major upgrades, like from 8 to 9. But the Academic prices, if you research them well, is generally as cheap or cheaper than the upgrade price.

I got the "normal" logic 8 version but for a EDU price.
Nothing points to a EDU version just the price.
So I should be able to update this to logic 9???
cheers

I bought it from a apple premium seller.
It was listed as logic 8 499€ EDU 175€
I never confirmed anywhere that this is the EDU version, also it is nowhere written (besides the bill)

Bought 8 Academic for $200 at my campus. I haven't seen any updates for 9 yet but I'll bump this when I do.

Buying a new academic at that price is a no brianer over upgrading. You have to prove you're a student or teacher. | My school had it for 150, it depends on the relationship your university has with Apple. I'd bet if it was 150 for 8 it will be 150 for 9, though you may have to wait a week or two longer for it.
Yes, if you just go to an apple store it's 449. But it really depends on the relationship between the school and Apple... same thing with Microsoft products. Some schools just charge the "academic price" for Windows and Office, and I've heard of other schools where you can basically get any piece of MS software for 20 bucks.

That's great! But unfortunately it looks like you have to be affiliated with the school to buy it.

erm, but with the academic/education licence, you can't legally use it for commercial gain can you? i'm sure that's the difference. the apple education store (at least here in the UK) gives students a small discount on logic and the other products, but it's the full commercial licence.
If you bought an educational version, you wouldnt legally be allowed to use it for profit, which is why it is so much cheaper. the education licence was created to enable students to finish projects at home/on the move etc.

Well that's fine for me, because I don't use it professionally. You're absolutely right. I bought Logic 8 when I taught a class in college on "Midi." The application the college used was Logic. Now I have it on my Mac as reference. I might use it some day. But for now my professional app is DP and sometimes PT 7.4. I've never used Logic professionally. |

I can get Logic Studio for 150. Express is 65. Both are great deals for students. If a student makes money of it, is it still kosher?

I am at a university now and am on the online apple store in the UK. The EDU price for Logic Studio 9 remains the same as it was for 8 - £118.
I can't see why i'd upgrade my version 8 when i can buy this cheaper.
I also can't see what the (new) fuss is about Logic Studio 9 with edu pricing - there is apparently no difference to how it was earlier. I also think it's legible to upgrade as it doesn't say anywhere on the store that it isn't?
Cheers
