Warning: Before You Buy UAD2 Laptop Card

If you already own other UAD cards and want to link the UAD2 Laptop to your account's plug in auths, you'll need access to your desktop computer that has your other UAD card in it. This is fine if you're home, but if you are on the road (as I am) you won't be able to link to your plugs. I have a support request into UA via email, and I'll try calling them tomorrow. In the past UA support has been great, so I hope they can resolve this quickly.

Best....H

How long will you be on the road with the laptop solo card? Perhaps in the meantime, you could activate the 14-demos for the plugins you need to use.

I'm out of town for a month, so I'd need another 15 day demo. The other problem is that it looks as though my uad1 card will be de-authorized if I want to use all of the plugs I bought for my uad1 on the portable rig with the uad2.

Individual auths can't be moved; it's all or nothing, so I can't keep some on the main machine and move others to the laptop.

This is not what I expected. I only use one computer at a time, so I'm not trying to pull anything on UA. Most software gives you two installs, one for your main rig and one for your laptop, or they use a dongle that can be freely moved from one system to another. In this case, the cards are the dongle, but the cards are really a poor dongle since they require specific types of slots. Even though there is a uad2 laptop to pcie card solution, it doesn't apply to my main computer, a G5.

So, I'm stuck. The plugs I bought and paid for can't be used on both machines. I have a backlog of projects on my main machine, so I can't leave the uad1 behind just yet. I don't think UA is trying to take advantage, I understand that they need to make money, but I just spent almost $500.00 for the card. Just to get the basic plugs I'd need (LA2A, 1176, 140 Plate) will set me back $250.00 more. When I finally retire my 2 uad1 cards (one of which I'm not even using; it's sitting in my dead G4 mirror drive) will I be able to transfer my remaining authorizations? Will UA reimburse me for the duplicate auths?

I'll let you all know how it goes after my call to UA tomorrow. They have given me outstanding service in the past; hopefully they will be understanding.

Best...H

As long as you place the Laptop Solo into the same Hardware Group as your other UAD cards when you registered the card you will be able to use all of your plugins. If you did not place the laptop solo into the same Hardware Group then you will need to contact UA tech support (via phone is the quickest) and request that they manually transfer the laptop solo card into the same Hardware Group. You can't do this yourself after the fact, only UA can transfer cards between Hardware Groups once registered. Also, you can explain the circumstances and they should be able to do a "demo reset" and give you access to your plugins for another 14-days if need be. Contact UA tech support and I am sure they will be able to help you out. I had to transfer a card from one Hardware Group to another (so I could use all my plugins) and UA tech support did it for me while I was on the phone with them. It only took a phone call and it was done in about 10 minutes. From what I understand you can have up to (4) UAD-1 cards + (4) UAD-2 cards (which includes the Laptop SOLO) in a Hardware group and you can share your licences between every card in the group. UA wants you to be able to use your existing plugin licences with your Laptop SOLO, but it needs to be in the same Hardware Group. The only restriction is you can't have these installed in different computers AND using them at the same time. IOW, UA does not want you using your desktop DAW (with UAD cards) and then loaning/renting out your laptop (with the laptop SOLO) to other people without a second licence. It is a personal use license. But UA does envision users doing work on their desktop DAW and then when you are away having access to your plugins while using a laptop (with laptop solo card). Just make sure all your UAD cards are in the same Hardware Group. Each Hardware Group requires a separate plugin license.

Call UA tech support and I am sure they will get you up and running in no time!

Cheers,

Billy Buck

Hey there everyone!

Billy... To quote one of my FAVORITE actors (Robert De Niro as Archibald 'Harry' Tuttle) in one of my FAVORITE films (Terry Gilliam's 'Brazil') "...we're all in it together" so thank you for the input and information! Very much appreciated...

H... sorry about any frustration about the registration process. It is true that typically you will need to have access to the desktop system to complete the 'link' process part of registration for your new UAD-2 Solo/Laptop. But no worries (TA DAH!!)... If you can please contact us directly we can work with you to manually register your new UAD-2 Solo/Laptop into your account.

Note about demos... The UAD-2 Solo would need to have the registration completed in order for me to issue you a demo reset (there has to be something registered in your account to 'reset') so this would not work.

So to wrap up...

H... I invite you to contact me directly at UA Customer Support and we can get this all sorted ASAP.

I have auths for all my cards, uad1 and uad2 laptop, without having to buy additional licenses. There are some limitations that are best checked at UA.

It would be great if that's the case. I run a multicomputer estudio, and being unable to use UAD plugs when processing in my linked computers is a drag since I have to bounce a heck of a lot.

I currently have 1 of the new UAD quads, and nearly the entire UAD catalog... but I really can't afford to buy all the licenses again. Moving PCIe cards is also very inefficient to say the least.

I am willing to get more cards though.

@ Dan, any solutions about this?

Yo 'M' (or do you prefer '127'),

Typically the plug-in license agreement would require new plugins for each computer system. However we've created a new function in the My.Uaudio system for UAD-2 Solo/Laptop users. This is called 'Link'. We've allowed laptop users to 'Link' their new product to an existing account group which allows the UAD-2 Solo/laptop user to share all plug-ins assigned to that group.

This is similar to what we established for UAD-1 Xpander users (plug-in sharing).

There are some options that we can discuss in regards to your situation ( UAD-2 Quad PCI-e card registration and group assignments). Please give me a call directly and we can talk about it!

Or in other words...
127, I can give you the 411... and it's as easy as 123... ; )

Just dealt with this issue. Dan was accessible, knowledge, quick, and not at all condescending.

Hooray for companies that operate this way.

cheers,
c

UA support is awesome. I sent an email asking what type of tube was in my UA 710, and I got a response back within a day! It was also a very detailed and personable response. You just don't see that very much.
