10000rpm vs 32mb cache?

ok i know this has been debated over and over but im still a little confused.

i want to put a second hd in my g5 for the audio files. what will give me higher track counts 10000rpm vs 32mb cache? i already have some external hd's for backing up, so space isn't a big problem.

Western Digital 150GB 10,000rpm Serial ATA-II-300 HDD w. 16MB Cache (WD1500HLFS) Velociraptor | Techbuy Australia

vs

Western Digital 500GB 7200rpm Serial ATA-II-300 HDD w. 32MB Cache (WD5001AALS) | Techbuy Australia

if the 10000rpm drive is better, will it be heaps faster or just a little?

cheers steve.

Cache mainly helps when reading and the drive can predict what you going to access next. For writing streams like in recording cache doesn't help as much. Now a fast spindle speed helps both reads and writes cutting down access times. So if me I would go for the faster spindle it will help everything on that disk.

Now something else to think about faster spindle also mean more heat so make sure you have good cooling in whatever you put a 10K RPM drive in.

I have a Velociraptor and I've never really noticed any kind of measurable improvement over just a regular drive. But I don't work with extremely high track counts.

For me the greatest benefit of the Velociraptor is it's small 150GB size.

i suppose i wont see any improvement untill i start pushing the drive. i just got a project to mix that has over 100 tracks at 88.2 and my external 7200rpm drive doesent handle it.i dont know if its the drive itself or the firewire bandwidth. but getting an internal 10000rpm drive hopefully get closer to being able to handle that kind of workload.

does anybody know if the cooling system in the g5 is going to be fine?

Go for SSD discs instead. Much faster than a 10.000 disc. And silent.
