The single window design of Ableton is the clincher for me.

You forgot the cryptic error message floating, frozen on top of all those pretty windows and toolboxes...

With regard to all-on-one-screen interfaces: that sounds fine as long as you're not stuck with all that stuff on your screen. But it seems to me that DAWs that have different windows for different functions typically have various window docking and layout template functions. I prefer flexibility and configurability in my professional tools.

Presonus Studio One - very like it's GUI, modern, stylish and easy on eyes. Great job, 10 of 5!

Adobe Audition. The interface is configurable to be like pretty much any other DAW. Pretty slick, and easy to get used to.

I voted Cubase 5 becasue Steinberg finally realised what a nightmare Cubase VST was and basically copied what Logic 5 was (the best ever all time DAW GUI) and made Cubase 4 then 5 uncluttered and toned the colours down

Meanwhile and ironically following the fable of "fields of diamonds" Apple decided to search elsewhere for their perfect GUI and created Logic 8 which I hate using in the same way I hated Cubase VST. I don't need 12 different ways of doing the same thing ..... ahhhhgggggg!!

I'm actually with Rufuss, if they uncripple PT8 Le then I'll move over to PT8 full time.

One DAW closes and another one opens.

I'll give a +1 for this. It's certainly not pretty but it puts what you use the most where you need it. If Audition 1.5 had individual volume meters and you could put effects on the master bus I wouldn't use any other program. As it stands now though, it's still my go to program for tracking. So easy to set up and run, plus it seems to have this habit of just working very very well.

if all we had to go on was these images, it would be a meaningless choice

some of the images are pictures of the edit windows and other are pictures of the mixer

I think the Mixers look the cleanest and the editors look too busy.

I vote for whichever one has the Large Type option!
