ProTools Import Session/Template Question?

Quick question.... I recently was setting up a template and all was well. However, My track colors didn't import properly (only green & blue) so thats weird. Secondly, do I have to have audio on the track or something to import session data onto it? I made some new (blank) tracks and when I go to import the data it only has none or new track as destination to do import and I dont want to import them as new separate tracks! How do I import say... a prev. made drum template w/fx,routing etc.... over certain existing tracks that I choose???

Im on PT M-Powered 7.4 btw....

Thanks in advanced!

You can't - only PT HD has the option to choose what session data you import.

You have to work around it - set up your template session with no audio files, then import the "blank" tracks, and move your audio on to them.

Wrong! LE and M Powered can import any track but you can't import the effects and some routing information. Just like you can't import a plugin.

no - I'm right.

Maybe you're not understanding the question properly - I'm pretty sure I am.

Look at the attached - this is a PT LE screen grab. For each track from your template session, you can either import the track or not.

Now under PT HD, you have the option to import the settings from the template track onto existing tracks - for example, I could import my "hat" track in the picture to "hat" within the session.

Underneath, you have the option to import specific aspects of the tracks - for example, you can import i/o, plugins, outputs and volume levels WITHOUT importing any audio, playlists or regions. So...you could superimpose that on your existing tracks within the new session, and then you've got a rough mix going straight away.

You CAN'T do this in LE, nor in M-Powered - it's a PT HD only feature.

so...actually, what YOU'RE saying is totally incorrect. You CAN import FX, routing or plugin info - it's just an all or nothing thing.

But like I said - you can work round it, just takes a bit longer.

Ok.. I know I'm playing devils advocate here..

and it doesn't help the OP as he's on M-Powered...

Strictly speaking this isn't exclusively an PT HD thing.

The "Enhanced" session data import options are available for PT LE with DV Toolkit 2 (not sure about DV Toolkit 1) and Complete production Toolkit.

I'm running CPTK and here's a screen grab...

Fair enough - I forget what extras DV toolkit adds, since neither myself nor anyone I know in the music field has it! Pretty high admission price for a few fancy import functions, plus a load of stuff I'll never need

And yes - it doesn't help the OP!

I use it at home and find using loads of RTAS plugs and a serious load of auxes, PT LE with CPTK pisses on my G5 HD 3 and Intel HD2 as voices aren't eaten up by said plugs and routing.

Sometimes I have to cut down my sessions to make them run on the HD rigs.. go figure.

Shit for tracking though.

I came across this post while searching to find out the very same thing. I used PT HD 8 a couple months back and it had the extra import session data options. I love it. Unfortunately, I'm still on LE.

Does anyone know specifically if the "Music Production Toolkit 1" offers this 'import session data' upgrade? I really don't want all the crap that comes with the "Complete" version either. I wish software options like this were offered individually and not bundled with completely non-related junk.

I would like to thank psycho-monkey for his taking the time to answer my queries on another somewhat related thread. The result is , I have now upgraded to PTLE 8 and am loving it. I did a back up of 7.4 to my secondary glyph and then did an uninstall of 7,4 then installed leopard 10.5.6 from the install disk then installed ptle 8 also from the disk . and since all my pt7.4 sessions are always recorded to my primary Glyph when I open them up in PTLE8 everything is there Colors, groups, plugins, routing etc... so far the only thing that doesn't work is my Amplitube 2 live, it throws the session into a tizzy and PT quits. I suspect I have to do an upgrade for it .. yet Amplitube 1 LE seems to work fine ??? any way thanks again ........ Kev

I've actually got amplitube 2 and it works fine.

I couldn't get amplitube 1 to work...but mine's not the LE version, but a full version updated from the original SE version included with my 002. Don't really care - Amp2 is much better anyway!

Have you logged into your user account and downloaded the latest version? I think there's a leopard upgrade required.

Thanks for the kind words!
