Smile RAM for intel i7 920 and hardrive help

Hello, Okay, i have been thinking about upgrading my hardrive to 15RPM for audio and samples and even changing my OS hardrive from 7200rpm to 10RPM or 15RPM or 12 ect.

I know about noise and heat, but if the performance is better i will sort out the noise and extra cooling after.

Now it's costly for these drives and money is tight for me at the moment. I just got a i7 920 and i feel it is faster than my old PC in some area's but when i am opening samples it feels slower and i am pissed about it. so this is why i am changing a few things HD's RAM ect.

I have been looking at RAM and i would like to know if Corsair Dominator GT 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-14400C7 (1866MHz) Tri-Channel With Airflow Fan (TR3X6G1866C7GTF) is the best option for the i7. but i know i will have to overclock to match the ram, "i think". Can anybody explain?? And i am using vista64 and a ex58-ud5 and 6gb OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 - Okay i changed the base clock with this ram but then i realised that it is pointless unless the ram is capable of going higher.

Oh and, i haven't purchased cubase5 yet, but i have reason and ableton and it was to sluggish and poppy and clicky etc. I also use a RME multiface 2 pcie and i have a emu1616m just incase your wondering. I feel my i7 is slower than my old pentium D.

Anyway i know this is abit scattered but this is how it is for me, im not great on a computer as far as tech is concerned. I like to use loads of samples and when i get cubase5 i plan to record loads of tracks and use loads of plugins and vst's. anybody using an i7 920 and having trouble??

OKAY, please people i don't need smart arses or negative comments i just want some help.

Thanks to anybody who can help

hI,
1) dont waste your money on 10k anything unless you are still trying to use Giga
32meg cache drives!

2) no point to ram past 1600 unless doing extreme over clocking and not recommended for a pro system (over clocking is 100% ok just not out of spec)

3) you have serious issues if your old system feels faster.
have you run some benchmarks both synthetic and audio tests

Very strange, P4 D and i7 are worlds apart for performance, the i7 advantage is huge.

What model Hard disk are you using, I know of someone who brought some new Samsung drives and then was amazed at the slow performance, it turns out he had brought the new F2 Eco models that run at 5400RPM instead of 7200RPM, just something to check.

Giga
32meg cache drives? Are you saying don't use them unless they are 32mb cache?
I read that someone on here say they use 10rpm HD for OS and programs but not on audio and sample storage. I am thinking that the 10-12-15 are going to be better because they have faster seek times and a sustained data rate. BUT, i am not sure and once again i am not a wizz when it comes to the fine points so i am just learning as we speak.

With regards to ram are you saying that it's pointless with 1800mhz and only get 1600mhz because???

Yeah i knew that the i7 was supposed to smoke the intel P D. BUT. I have had to set the latency from 6ms or 7ms to about 12 in order to stop pops etc.
At the moment i am just using reason4 and if i am opening samples into redrum while it is playing it will pop and click and on my old comp it didn't do it. so this is why i am asking about HDrives and ram.

I did have cubase essential 4 and i would be recording 1 track of audio and i would get pops after pressing the stop on the transport bar. I had sx3 years ago and had the same thing on another computer. so i am freaked out bcos i am just about ready to upgrade to cubase5 and record alot more so i kind of figured that if i have problems now then i am going to be worse off after upgrading with plugs etc.

Another thing is this: if i start and stop while using audio i get a high flick on the disk usage meter and thats what made me think about the Hdrive being slow.

Basically i need to push it to the max and have no problems. I would say that my track counts would be over 40 and using alot of samples and plugins, i fancy using UAD2 cards but i have to wait a minute.

Is my motherboard okay? i said what it was in the first post.

I know i am asking alot but this is my only option. thanks for the help to all of you even if i havent replied to you. nice1

This isn't right, run an application foud HERE and tells us your results. One thing that is really quick to try is turn off the Ethernet ports if they are not in use (go to network connections an right click on the port then disable.) they can interfere with your system.
