88.2KHZ/24BIT sessions....have I maxed out ma G5?

Been doing a record @ 88.2KHZ/24BIT in Logic pro 6.4.2, OSX 10.3.9, Dual G5 +3.5 Gb ram, all audio on xtra ATA internal drive (7,200rpm).....usual live kit / bass tracks, 6 gtr tracks, multiple bvs tracks...I think around 48 audio tracks in total ( with lots of edited regions)...... Now while comping the bvs...ie using the loop function....I keep getting "System Overload" messages.....at these high resolutions, have I come to the end of ma G5's capabilities ?

Whilst watching the activity moniter I notice the Logic CPU usage maxes out @ 100% + everytime I get "System Overload" messages....which leads me to think the CPU has had enough.......I can't be a ram issue 'cause activity moniter is always sitting at 2.7 Gb of RAM unused.

Comments please guys

It seems a serious session yes

It could be a HD speed problem as well maybe tho...Spread the files over 2 HD's and see if that helps.

Kudzu, can you really hear a difference between 48 and 88.2? I know my monitoring isn't so hot, but I'm hard pressed to hear a difference making rock recordings.

I had similar problems even on 48 k sessions in logic .Something weird does happen after 40 audio channels mark.I had an option to finish that project with another software so i went with it and it worked .I had overload msg with logic and same project plays in nuendo with no probs on single drive .Try bouncing backing vocals, to go below 40 track mark or smth.I would like to know has anyone sucessefully used logic with 70-80 audio tracks too .
good luck

Depends what kinda plugins you have going. Did you try freezing some tracks to take the load of fthe CPU?

Also I agree, I think it could be a hard drive limitation.

enharmonic....I monitor with Dynaudio Bm6a's, fed by a Benchmark DAC-1.....I can hear the difference between 48 and 88.2....and I Like it

Sat at the computer 2day to try and sort this out and discovered, using the Audio Performance window in Logic, that its the HD....it maxes out, I don't think @ 7,200 rpm, it can deal with it....enquired about 10,000rpm internal ATA drives, they're not cheap ???? I'm gonna get one, c if it helps....keep ya all posted

Right on. I'll keep working at 88.2 then. Appreciate the feedback
