Good Noise Reduction Plugins....

whats going on, i just got some classic Bob Marley and Wailers mp3z of this recording in San Fransico and I wanted to master them, but I have no noise reduction plug-ins. Anybody have some good recommendations? Thanks.

it would help if you described the hardware and software you are using.

BNR has saved my ass more than I can count. The only real trick is being able to find a bit of open noise by itself to "fit". It puts a fat sample delay on your track so expect to nudge it foward if you are multitracking (which it sounds like you aren't).

E-cue, the Waves X-noise series is much better than BNR IMHO.

My ex assistant was recently recording the Queens of the Stone Age axman backstage before a show on a laptop / Mbox rig (he was guesting on an UK artists album and this was the only oportunity to record him) and the laptop he was given didnt have the latest USB drivers for the Mbox, so there were tiny but audible digital clicks all over the gtr tracks, what to do? Enter waves X-Click. Worked a treat.

Mess around with it in TDM, when happy, copy & paste settings to the AudioSuite version.

I second what Jules says. The waves restoration plugs are great for the money. The algorythm was developed by Algorythmix and short of the top tools like Cedar, No-noise they are really good.

I must get into these. The main thing I, and I'm sure everyone else, hate is the tinkley sound on the top end that sounds like a badly encoded MP3. None the less, it still works better than any hardware units I've used (which have since been sold).

Yes the Waves Restoration can save your ass! It cleaned up a buzzed guitar track on a live multitrack I did recently (Polytone amp and a 54' Gibson)

BUT what I'm surprised not to hear thus far is, WHY BOTHER MASTERING AND MP3?

I have the San Fran 1973 (which your likely talking about) Full Fidelity (to an extent) .WAV file that the MP3 was made from. You can find a non compressed version to work on.

Is it the recording with Tom Doledo at The Record Plant? Thats what I have...

but with regards to mastering MP3z, the files are compressed at 192kHz and sound pretty good so I figure when I get them sounding real good what a portfolio piece that would be! Also, being an engineer I won't have to listen to them and go "What the hell was this engineer thinking!!"...unbelievable noise compared to other music recordings of the 70s

So what's the state of noise reduction plugs today? I cant remember the last time I needed to use NR but where are we in 2006/7 ?

Are there different faves for PC and for MAC?

i still use waves x-noise... but have used z-noise with good results...
