Question for those who use Dropbox (or may just have an answer)

So I've set up a drop box account so I can send my clients rough mixes and I load a AAC file that plays fine on my iTunes but when they open the same file it won't play through their iTunes but it will play through Quicktime. any solutions?

Do you mean "won't play" or "won't open automatically" in iTunes?

The in the case of the latter: tell them to Command+I the file, and change the default application to iTunes for all files of this type.

In all cases you might want to try zipping the file(s) before uploading them via Dropbox.

Simply Control+click on the file(s) and select zip compression from the contextual menu. Upload the zipped file.

I wanted to ask too, if anyone uses Dropbox, is there any shady fine print or is this a good deal? https://www.getdropbox.com/terms

I just have a Mac account, and use Filechute. Really easy, PC users and Mac users just get an email from Filechute (about 15.00) and click on the link (which links to your .mac account) and they are downloading....pretty painless.

That sounds good. My .Mac fails me al too often. More often than not, when I send a download link out of .Mac to someone, they never receive it. I've gone back to email and dropbox asa result. I'll definitely check into filechute though. Thanks!

It's here: FileChute for Mac OS X - Send Files Too Large to Email (e-mail)

I know what you mean about the Mac account, sometimes it is a bit wacky, but for the most part it's been OK using Filechute, though Filechute can't help you if .Mac is down for some reason. Give it a shot, if you are already paying for .mac it may prove worth it...

I had been using dropbox for sending mix refs to clients, but then I re-read the terms. It is definitely a bit shady!

Your Public Folder
While you own the content contained in Your Files, files placed in your public folders are automatically available to other Dropbox users and to the general public. By placing Your Files in your public folder, you hereby grant all other Dropbox users and the public a non-exclusive, non-commercial, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable, perpetual and irrevocable right and license to use and exploit Your Files in your public folder. In other words, a file in your public folder can be used by anyone, for any purpose except commercial use. If you do not want other people to be able to use Your Files in this manner, then simply do not place Your Files in your public folder. By placing Your Files in your public folder, you agree and acknowledge that Dropbox has no responsibility or obligation to monitor or notify of you of any non-compliance related to the license you have granted and that Dropbox has no responsibility to enforce or police, or aid you in enforcing or policing, the terms of that license.

I know they have to say this to cover their ass, but I'm not risking a clients music getting leaked, and being held responsible!!! I've gone back to idisk, and using the new file sending feature, and password protecting the links.

i use it and just read the fine print yep, that's their way of sayin', you are agreein' to public P2P sharin'. no different than uTorrent, Wyzo, etc. let's be real...none of this $hit is private. one is foolin' themselves if they think so

Thanks everyone - this looks promising, PC World rated it higher than DropBox:

Syncplicity - Syncplicity: Effortless Backup, Synchronization, and Sharing

PCWorld also gave BeInSync, SugarSync, and Live Mesh honorable mention. Dropbox came in @ 4th place

Glad there's alternatives.
