waves API 2500 comp, manual makeup = manual input?

anybody noticed this? if you take the api2500 waves plugin, set it up as you like on some track, then activate manual makeup and adjust the makeup, it seems to drive the input and make it compress more or less rather than changing the output as it should... what gives? is this just a bug?

API 2500 make up gain effects amount of compression?
