Thread Starter | I want only file sharing but not internet sharing I have 2 win xp pro installed computers , one is for internet and other uses and the other is for music production... both computers are hooked up through one network hub. so i can use internet sharing and file sharing through the network hub.. but i only want file sharing not internet... and removing the hub is great.. if i connect them through a cross network cable directly, can i achieve this goal? |

| Err.... OS? But yeah, this should work. I've done it with two macs w/ a normal ethernet cable, and the way to do it isssss..... Comp 1: ip: 192.168.1.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 (doesn't matter really just make it the same on both) default gateway / router: blank comp 2: ip: 192.168.1.2 subnet: 255.255.255.0 default gateway / router: 192.168.1.1 see? the first computer is the "router" for the 2nd. good luck! edit: the ip addy doesn't matter, just make comp 1s ip the same as comp 2s router / gateway, and keep them on the same number, just change the last digit. |

| I don't know your skill level so please don' t mind me saying, On XP you'll need a crossover cable; a regular ethernet cable won't work; the crossover cable has two of the the end wires flipped.

| Gear Head | I have this set up exactly as described above; works perfectly. Don't forget to enable file/printer sharing aswell on one end... |

| It's not an XP thing it a NIC thing. Many newer computer the network chip can sense when a regular cable is used to directly connect two computer and internally crosses the lines. So you don't alway need a crossover cable any more.
