10.5.7 released

10.5.7 has just been released.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update

Mind you I'm sure no one is chomping at the bit to download this right away.
I'm working on stuff this week, so I think I'll pass for now.

I think one should ALWAYS use the combo update, never the automatic update. See link above.

Also, the combo is 729 MB - quite a difference, lots more going on there!

It seems that for the size of the combo update, there would be more fixes
than what is mentioned there. I wonder what else is under the hood?

729 MB - I wonder what's happening under the hood? DL'ing now - probably will be ready by the time I'm done with supper

Oh - and always ALWAYS use the combo update! Too many chances of errors with the software update. Thanks for the link.

10.5.7 seemed to breake support for my euphonixs mc mix on imac. it was working perfectly with 10.5.6 and the update seems to be the culprit. will keep you posted

Obviously I will get flamed by saing this but by saying something like that you look like an audiophile who claims that taping rocks to his cables will make the soundstage wider.

By installing the whole combo update you will install everything since 10.5.0 again. By installing via Automatic Update your computer will install only what it needs.
In Windows XP world combo update would mean installing SP1 + SP2 + SP3 again

Apple has dropped the ball on automatic updates, but last time it happened it was 2002 or 2003... so no need to monger fear here.

If you haven't "optimised" your system by deleting receipts, everything will work just fine using Automatic Updates.

If you look at macworld or other mac forums / magazines they say you should download the update.

But not the combo update!! The delta update. It's 443 Mb and it's the upgrade from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7.

Get it here: Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update

Great. Apparently Snow Leopard is coming in June / July, so maybe this is the last one...

Sorry, but after experiencing a non booting Mac Pro when using Software Update for a past update (I think it was 10.4.10) the advice to use the combo updater is VERY sound and is pretty much universally recommended in the Mac community.

And I've been a system's engineer/programmer for 14 years (which also pays for my gear habit) with WAAAAY more experience in software updates and patches then I would like to have (don't even get me started on Adobe patches...).

There's a small graphical glitch.

You can see this happen when moving mute automation nodes. It flickers heavily.

I think this stems from an improvement in 10.5.7 for Mac users with NVidia graphic cards, which then seems to cause a new problem with Logic Pro. Perhaps depending on your graphics card (I have ATI).

Hopefully it will be fixed in a future system update.

Haven't found anything else yet.

I was going to chime in and mention this but you beat me to it! I support 30 Apple systems doing my day job and the info to install the combo update first as a rule is a falsehood that shouldn't be spread. It also is a waste of bandwidth (and probably gas in some way).

Carry on with the reports.

It's not universally recommended. It's an approach taken by those that don't know any better. And is now being proliferated by those who should know better.

But go with what works for you.

Pardon my ignorance... but what's a combo update? And why is it so much larger?

Thanks

It simply has all the updates from an original RTM install of the OS. It should be used (in most cases) on a fresh, non updated install (or if you skipped an update) to save you from having to incrementally go through all the updates. There's nothing code wise different from it. All the combo update does is "version" check all the files that needs updating and ignores those that do not. This gives some folk peace of mind in that all the files will at least be checked and replaced as needed.

The reason most audio pro's recommend using the Combo updater versus the delta updater is that we've had some issues with Mac OS updates and the delta updater before - bugs that were not present on machines that used the combo update instead. So, safer is better.

Never heard any problem with the delta update!!

Keep in mind the delta update is different from using the software update!

It may sound like a weird thing to do using the combo updater instead of the auto update but I think most of the folks doing it this way (including myself) have run into serious problems in the past by using auto update.

Since using the combo updater instead, I have NEVER had any issues irrise from the update other than the typical compatibility issues sometimes introduced with 3rd party software.

Guys - the Apple Forums are awash with reports of 10.5.7 messing up screen resolutions, particularly, it seems, on 3rd party monitors.

Check for yourself - Apple Discussions

Put me in the 'wait-and-see' camp for this one.
