M Audio Profire 610 standalone (s/pdif) into Pro Tools HD 192?

I have an M-audio Profire 610.
In the manual, it says you can use it as a 2 channel pre & ad/da in standalone mode.

I'm a bit confused by this, wondering if the preamps are the only inputs that can be used in standalone.

We have an input problem that needs to be be repaired with the console at the studio I'm working in right now. Unfortunately, we're in a time crunch for tracking an artist's record and I'm trying to figure out a "workaround" until they get the console fixed.

Basically, the Command 24 console has a bank of 8 inputs that is damaged.

The studio has two 192 converters and an HD3 rig. However, we're out of preamps for direct instruments with the damaged ones in the console.

I'm trying to see if I can bring my Profire 610 and use it via s/pdif in standalone mode into one of the 192s so that I can get a couple more direct ins.

Is it also possible to use the midi input instead of the mic pre's? Basically, I'm trying to see if we can record a synth with the midi input into lightpipe/192

Let me know if any of this will work-

Thanks!

From the Profire 610 Owner's Manual:
"In Standalone mode, ProFire 610 functions as an analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converter.
Analog inputs 1-2 are “passed through” to analog outputs 1-2 while simultaneously being converted to digital
and sent out of the S/PDIF output. The S/PDIF input is converted to analog and sent out of analog outputs 3-4."

Yep, you can use it as a standalone converter. Looks like your only input options in that mode are preamp or direct (instrument).

I'm confused about what you're trying to do with MIDI. MIDI data can't magically be turned into streaming audio without some type of synthesizer or sampler!

If you have a standalone hardware synth, just plug its outputs into the instrument inputs of the Profire while it's in standalone mode. The S/PDIF output of the Profire should be connected to the S/PDIF input on the 192. If you want to use a software synth, you'll want to install the drivers for the Profire and use it as a MIDI I/O device in Pro Tools.
