Swapping boot drive to new Computer??

I have a question. I am switching my PT system to a new computer. My current system is on a Mac 2x3ghz dual core and want to move to a Mac 2x2.6ghz Quad Core. Is it possible for me to simply swap the boot drives thus not forcing me to spend all day reinstalling software, plugins, prefs, etc, etc. Anyone done this or am I asking for trouble?
Any help is much appreciated. Running PT 8 HD 2 Accel btw.
cheers,
shaun

maybe

or you can use the software built into OSX for this purpose. Its called migration assistant, you just need to attach your computers with a firewire cable and start one up in the correct mode, from then on its only a few mouse clicks (and then leave it to do its thing over lunch) . you'll have to reauthorise some stuff either way

Thanks!
I just used migration assistant via firewire to copy all my data (pro tools files, samples etc) from one extra internal drive (which I use to record to, as well as most of my samples) to another extra internal drive on the new computer. Seems to work great (going to let it finish copying overnight). Neither of these drives were system drives though. My old system was running very smoothly and was wondering if I could just physically switch the the system drives so I could utilize the quad core processors instead of copying to the new drive? You are probably correct that I would have to reauthorize some stuff no matter what to work on the computer.
thanks again,
shaun

I used migration assistant recently on my internal drive from my old computer. It seems to work well. Some programs and plugins have to be reauthorized, since they use the CPU ID (or similar) as part of the authorization.

The one exception was drumagog that had to be reinstalled from the original install file..

All my other sample based libraries (BFD, Kontakt, VSL) had to be relinked

Also my iloks seemed to crash the computer until I upgraded the OS to the correct version via software update.

I am looking to do the same, but my system is older. I would like to move os9/pt from a g3 that is not equipped with firewire. it is a pt3 system. can I just swap the drive into my new computer? when I install the pci cards will the scusi drive work automatically?

you can do it over a network as well (ethernet or wireless I believe)

depending on what type of computer your new one is (ie. is it running osx or even an intel for instance) it is likely that it won't be able to run the same versions of the software as your old one, so you may not be able to copy applications across.
