Buy Lots of RAM (At least 3 GB) if you are going to use a lot of of instruments buy even more (6-8GB). Buy premium RAM CRUCIAL or CORSAIR.
Make sure spotlight is turned off on you recording drives, turn off spotlight (comd. space) and dashboard (F12) shortcuts.
Do a clean install! of everything make sure all your PI are up to date. There are only a few that will not work in Tiger without an update.
FWIW Apple.com is selling refurbed 2.0 for 1800 and 2.5 for 2300

The Corsair RAM that works in G5's is the System Select. It's the same as their Value RAM with a sticker slapped over it. Something might be different, I don't know. There's a lengthy discussion about it on the Apple Discussion forums.

I found a nice deal at OWC. This RAM will work for sure.

2 GB RAM Upgrade at OWC

6 GB RAM, really? Wow.

Save $5.00 can cause issues - I ordered OWC RAM and had problems with it they chrged me a 15% restocking fee - The RAM did not work. Don't try to save on RAM buy the best you can. Premium RAM will have faster speeds and in OS X it is highly important on a G5 and G4

I've got to chime in some support for OWC ram.
Several clients and friends have all had great experiences and reliability with OWC drives and ram so, I wouldn't be afraid to continue to recommend it or buy it myself. (Drives or Ram that is).

There is probably an exception to everything and certainly the above poster had a bad experience but by and large OWC gets rave reviews.

as always

If you read through some pages of the Apple Discussions, there's inevitably people who have problems with one company/brand of RAM or another. I've seen one person post that they have had problems when trying to return OWC RAM. This RAM says Lifetime Guarantee though. If I have a problem myself, then I won't deal with them again. Until then, I can only assume it will work as advertised.

Actually the Corsair for $270 didn't say it was a matched pair, which the OWC did. So, the OWC may be faster.

Is 10.4.2 the best os for ptools tdm and lE?

Thanks y'all for the tips! I bought 2 1 gig sticks from mac solutions, been good for the last 8 years or so with them I'll let you know how the mem works!
I transfered a bunch of stuff from my laptop, couldn't remember my isp stuff so I used the laptop settings, the migrate utility worked like a charm!
Is 10.4.2 the best or should I stay with 10.4.1? thanks

I have a Mac mini. I am curious though as to what differences you're experiencing by having more than 6 gig of ram?

I have a smaller bank balance.

When you think about what RAM does, and you think about how DAW applications work, it seems to me that you could never have enough RAM. Just think how fast everything would be if you replaced your hard drives with 120 Gigs of RAM.

Every time I increased the amount of RAM in my computer, the result was higher track counts and higher plugin counts. At some point, I'm kind of curious to get all the slots filled up just to see how well it works with 8 Gigs in it. Only problem is that I had 8 512's in it at one point, so every time a pair of 1 G's comes in, a pair of 512's goes out. Kind of inefficient way to do it. I could have planned better.

Anyway, I kind of feel like the thing's designed to have that much RAM in it. Why else would the slots be there?

Apparently you can open System Preferences, go to Spotlight and click on the Privacy tab. Then drag your recording drive into that window.

That's how I read it last night. Haven't tried it yet myself. I'll go upstairs and fire up my new G5 in a minute.
