Hey.

Hit the "Global Tracks" disclosure triangle at the top of the arrange window, then use the pencil tool to draw where you want your tempo change.

Simply drag up and down on the line (post tempo change) to change the tempo.

You may possibly be able to just change the tempo with the playhead at the right location, like you do with time signatures, but I'm not certain.

This can be fiddly as hell to get right, though the adjustable tempo curve feature in Global tracks is elegant and quick. For accuracy I'd suggest writing tempo changes straight in on the Tempo window, and if exact tempo / timing relationships are important (say for AV work) then Tempo Operations is quite possibly the best way to go.

To the OP - if you try to change the tempo on the transport bar, then it's going to change globally, so you need to use either the Global Tracks or Tempo windows. But when you refer to 4/4 and 2/4 bars, remember this has nothing to do with the speed of your arrangement - the time signature of your piece and its tempo are two entirely different things.

On a related note, I find that I get much better results on sessions when using a click, if I write my own, using either a couple of percussion sounds or even possibly a full rhythm loop. It can have the effect of being a lot more musical and 'human' for a performer to play along with. Also, it's easier to create more informative clicks for things like slowing down / speeding up / anticipating sudden tempo changes, if you're not relying on Logic's built in metronome.

I agree, I almost always use a simple drum beat now, it allows me to get into the feel a lot better than a very linear click.
