Running logic on a laptop

I am travelling for about 3 weeks and wanted to take my studio on the road with me to knock up a few ideas to be developed when i return.

My only problem is cost.

A New macbook pro is over £1000 whereas i can pick up a new laptop for like £250-£300.

Is there any way to use logic 8 on a laptop???

cheers
DS

Well, Logic works fine on laptops. Some time ago I saw Logic 8 running on a G4 867MHz Alu PowerBook. It was perfect for tracking but as you can imagine couldn't stand the load of adding plugins to the tracks. It worked fine when adding the plugins then freezing the tracks, and de-freezing the tracks one at a time as needed.
Well, you get the idea.

Oh and this guy had a Duet plugged in too.

So the answer is Yes, you can have Logic run on a laptop, even an old one.

Then no. No way unless you manage to install Mac OS on your PC - which is unlikely, and then if you do somehow, I am not too sure about how the whole setup would behave. Hardware incompatibilities are more than likely to make the thing unusable.

But again, why bother with a PC laptop? As I told you, Logic can run on older laptops (Mac laptops!) that can be found within your price range. At least it lets you do some tracking which you can mix later on your system.

And following that reasoning, if it comes to do some tracking, why not use Garageband instead? I guess it is less CPU-consuming than Logic, and the projects can be opened and edited in Logic later...

Just a thought.

The Mac is almost "designed" for audio. A lot of effort has been put into the audio support (software and hardware) in Macs.

After having used both Macs and PCs with recording setups, I have realized that the Mac is definitely worth the extra cost... you will save it back tenfold in timesavings and lower stress levels.

Also, considering that GarageBand is free, and Logic Studio is less than half the price of PC apps that aren't half as powerful it's pretty much a no-brainer.

You won't be disappointed...

Garageband comes with EVERY Macintosh, and has for years... (and, that includes all iLife packages as well, including the indispensible iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD).

If you're seriously looking to save a few bucks, go to Apple's website and order a refurbished Mackbook. Brand new Macbooks start at $999 (I believe). You should be able to get a refurb for around $750. The standard Macbook is enough to run Logic perfectly fine. You do not have to get a Macbook Pro.

The white Macbook is very good for music. It has firewire 400 port (the aluminium ones have only USB!). This is good for using better audio interfaces and faster external drives.

It is cheaper than the aluminium macbooks:
white macbook - £720
aluminium macbook - £929 +

Logic and Garageband will run very well on both these Mac laptops!

I cheerfully run Logic 8 on a 1st-gen white MacBook (2.0 GHz, Core 2, 2 GB RAM). Works fine. I also used to dual-boot into Windows and run Samplitude under Bootcamp.
