ABLETON LIVE 5 IS OUT!!!

Just picked it up, via online download. WAY...WAY....WAY....better! I loved versions 3 and 4, but this one really is a step up! New plugins (beat repeater...so cool), better transport functions, it's all here!

Yeah, but are you still stuck to one time signature?

Been using Live since version 1, awesome software. However, a few things still urk me, some from older versions, some from this new version. Bear in mind, I just got it today and have only been messing about for a couple of hours.

- ths new transport feature. I'm not crazy about playback commencing from the cursor point. Perhaps there's a setting I can use to get it back to the old way. It's a pain when editing loops and such.

- Can't use the "resample" from master out directly from the track in Arrange mode. Have to toggle back to Session mode just to select that.

- Still not optimized for OSX. Love the new channel insert presets a la Logic, but a few of those and my Powerbook (1.25ghz/1GB RAM) goes the way of the buffalo. Add an Operator synth and a reverb on a send and it's time to look into freezing. The latter which I'm not too familiar with yet, sure it will come in handy. Still though, for being at V.5, way too many speed bumps and audio dropouts, CPU pegs 80% rather quickly, annoying as f***.

- The sound engine, sorry Abes, but it still sounds like ass. I love Live for composing, but my god does that summing buss need some real estate. Sounds like ClearChannel radio rock by the time you've added your eighth track. Horrible.

All that said, I still love using it. Definitely the best DAW for the way I like to work.

i am looking for something what can seriously replace my logic. do some people here use ableton in a classical way for production? has it something like the midi matrix editor to edit and play vst instruments? i am not verry interested in its live and experimental stuff, just want a straight production tool. i go OTB and use a lot outboard, so the lack of a good mixbus should not be a problem.

Live will not replace Logic.
It is more of a remix and DJ tool.
Try DP if you're on Mac

You really tink so? Have you tried mixing at lower levels? I've managed to get some decent sounding mixes out of Live, but then again I've never mixed down something with a lot of tracks in it. I mean, it's supposed to be a 32-bit sample-accurate mixing environment, so assuming one isn't 'warping' audio in Live or using plugins that cause latency, it should sound nice, right? I wonder if part of the problem is due to its lack of decent metering and the tiny on-screen faders, which are about half the size of the faders in competing DAWs. You can get a lot more precision out of them with a control surface.
