Best pc laptop for Steinberg MR816X??

Hi

I'm searching for a firewire interface with warm preamps, and have lately been reading a lot of good reviews of Steinberg MR816x. Any comments about it's sound?? Is it comparable to Mackie Onyx 1620, that they say to be very warm and accurate?

I'm also buying a laptop to work with that, and that's the big question. Any experience or tips about which pc laptops work smoothly with Steinberg MR816x (and Cubase)? Or is it always safer to buy a mac (I heard the connection issues are fixed)??

I've bought one pc laptop for DAW use 2 years ago and it was supposed to work fine but it was a piece of crap and didn't work properly with anything so I'm trying to get this one right...

Thanks for any help!

Hi there,

I have a Samsung Q310 running my MR816 and it does a great job.

You will definately have to install XP though - Vista was a disaster!

Not had it long, so the Q310 should still be available i would think.

All the drivers for XP are available on the net. One thing that nearly screwed me up though:

When you install XP, you must install SP3 BEFORE you try to install the XP video drivers, or they don't work. I solved this by accident and don't know what I would have done otherwise. Also, you'll need to install the Firewire Hotfix - there's a link on here somewhere.

More grey hairs!

Forgot to mention - the Q310 has no Firewire slots so you'll need an adapter that plugs into the Expresscard slot on the side.

Laptop here: Cheap Laptops, Hard Drives, LCD Monitors, TVs and more at Ebuyer

Adapter here: Buy a Sonnet Tango FireWire 400 & USB2.0 ExpressCard - Mac & PC, #FWUSB2-E34 - eXpansys UK

I use a generic Buffalo external FW HD too. Nothing special.

MR816X

Glad to hear that it works well with laptop pc. Am going to be buying one(MR816X) in the next week or so along with the CC121 controller....any news on that? I have used Steinberg software products for years (Cubase, etc.) and am now going to go all Steinberg with my new set up. I am running Windows XP on a Dell Vostro 1710.....

I was running my Yamaha N12 on a stock Acer 1510 last year with a £5 Pluscom 2 port 1394 cardbus. It had the VT6306 chipset and was rock solid.

I'd not heard that before. What problems can they cause?
