How do you use hardware effects with ITB mixing?

Hi All,

Majorly basic question here:

I'm running Digital Performer on a Mac. Interface is a Duet. How do I use my external verbs, compression, eq when mixing ITB?

I'm interested in all things related such as latency/delay and signal quality loss.

Thanks!
Tom

Well first you need something a bit more extensive than a Duet which only has two in/outs . Depending on how many outboard device you want to include will determine how many ins and outs your interface should have ! You use the interface like inserts on a console ! Running reverbs is easier than running compressors in parrallel because you can get away with treating the latency as pre-delay for a Reverb unit , with parrallel compression you have to deal with phasing if signals are not properly compensated for by your DAW , how this is done in DP i'll leave to someone well versed in DP , i'm a Logic user ....

Quality loss will be determined by the performance of your converter you are sending and recieving with, the better the converter the less quality loss ....

Hope that gives you some idea .....

How about using the digitally connected effects units like the Lexicon MX400?

Do these avoid the usual pitfalls of using outboard gear when mixing ITB?
