Cannot SAVE and Can Only Do a SAVE AS on a Maxtor 300 GB WHO KNOWS WHY?

I am using a MAXTOR 300 GB (OneTouch II) drive with a Digital Performer 5 running on a Mac G4.
This was a brand new drive and I had never used it before this session.
I can perform a SAVE AS, but when I try to do a SAVE a prompt comes up that says that the name is taken and I have to give the file a new name.
I just add #1, #2 or greater to the end of the file name, but after lots of work I am accumulating a lot of files.

I have never had a problem saving anything to an external drive and I also have another MAXTOR 300G that saves just fine.

ANY IDEAS WHY THIS IS HAPPENING?

I routinely use all kinds of drives with several other Maxtor 300 GB drives when running DP5, Final Cut Studio 2 and many other programs.
It is a different model.

Weird. Is the project file marked as read-only or something?

How's the drive formatted? Would probably be worth copying, and reformatting....it's likely permissions are set wrong somewhere. You could try verifying/repairing the disk in disk utility.

Can you save the session file on it's own on a different drive?

Yeah - reformat. This has happened to me before and a reformat fixed it. The drive I was using seemed to have been defaulted as a read-only device.

definately a file permission issue. you don't have modify rights it looks like only create read and write. formatting may not be neccesary. do a search for bsd file permission setting and pop into the terminal and do some rootwheel and chown manipulation on the drive.

Sounds easier said than done, but I'll give these suggestions a try.

Remember, it will do a SAVE AS, but the following SAVE commands don't work.
It says that the name is taken.
I just add a #1, #2 or so on to end of the name., but the number starts to grow pretty quick!

IF it was set to READ ONLY in permissions wouldn't it not let me do a SAVE AS?

No - because then you're writing a new file - essentially, doing a save you're deleting the old file, then replacing it with a new one. Save as, you're not touching the old file, just creating a new one (and it sounds like you're creating it with read only permissions for whatever reason). If the disk itself was write protected...then you wouldn't be able to save as either.

It is a weird problem though.

I'll have to suss it out because I can do a SAVE AS without any problems.

It has to be in the permissions of that drive.
The drive was new out of a box when I first used it and it was doing this from the first time I used it.

Actually, there are a lot more parameters to the drive's permission that just read and write.
It's something in there.

New 500GB drives are on sale at Fry's for $79.00!!!!
I could just start over!

Right click on the HD, get info and change the permissions to read and write in all fields. Apply to all items. Done!
