Firewire 800 to 400 cable

Is there any reason to buy a firewire 400 drive??? Is a FW 800 port with a 800 to 400 cable pretty much the same thing???

If your external case will take SATA HD's, then FW800 is the way to go, as you will be able to use some of that SATA speed.
