Clocking externally from a Macbook's digital output? External option greyed out..

Hi, I've done a search around, but can't seem to find any info of real use..

I've managed to get the digital output running from my Macbook on mini-toslink..
Into an RME ADI-2

BUT...

I want to use the RME as the clock..

There's a panel to change it in Audio setup on the Mac, but the option is greyed out..

Anyone have any ideas?

Do I also need to be running the digital Input from the RME in order to clock from it?

I've just noticed a difference in sound, it sounds less open from when I was running a digi 003 clocked from my RME as my audio output, using S/pdif

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you

Are you feeding the macbook a digital signal? Like most things in os x, the clock option won't enable until it becomes relevant, ie: in this case, if it's receiving a digital clock.

for sure (but don't know if there's an option in mac to choose the ref clock)

You can't externally clock a device which only feed an output and don't get a IN signal ! What way would the external ref come if there's no IN ?
