Thread Starter | Monitoring The DAW Input
I'm using a Mackie 1604 to monitor the input of of DAW but I'd like to find a better way,the setup is RNP into Digi002 with two AKG 414's .I'm recording two voices. What I'm thinking of is something like a Coleman LS3 line level selector,I want to take each output of the RNP to the inpute of a line level selector like the Coleman, then take one output of the Coleman into the Digi002 and another into the Mackie for monitoring. If I do this will I have any impedance matching issue to deal with? Will I be able to totaly isolate the recorded audio inout from the signal sent to the mackie for monitoring? How does a line level selector of this type actualy work,is there tranformer isloation of some kind? Thanks in advance. |

Johnny, > I'm using a Mackie 1604 to monitor the input of of DAW but I'd like to find a better way < You might be making this more complicated than necessary. The 1604 already has everything needed to do what you want. Unless I'm missing something, I'd use the 1604 preamps and line inputs, then take from the channel insert points to send to your DAW. The 1604 preamp Trims then set the record levels, and the channel volumes control the monitor level. The figure below is from THIS article I wrote for EQ magazine. The figure shows a smaller Mackie mixer, but the principle is the same.) --Ethan

Ethen I think my initial post was a little misleading,I'm actualy going from the RNP outs to the Mackie aux ins,not directly to the Digi 002.The input to the 002 is from the insert outs on the Mackie just as your drawing shows.Only difference between what you suggested and what I'm doing now is that I don't use the Mackie pres. Problem is that the guy I'm working with doesn't want the recored audio anywhere near the mackie but we still need to monitor the input. So I thought we might be able to do this by using some kind of signal spliiter. The question I'm asking is whether or not this is a vianle approach. Will it give me true isolation of the recored signal and the monitored signal at a reasonable cost? At least I can offer the guy a solution that doesn't cost much and gives him what he's asked for.An an audio path isolated from the mackie. |

Johnny, > Will it give me true isolation of the recored signal and the monitored signal at a reasonable cost? < What, he's afraid the Mackie has Leprosy? ![]() Anyway, the answer is Yes - if you split the output of the RNP with a basic Y splitter and send one part to a recorder and the other to the Mackie, there's no way the Mackie can possibly "contaminate" the pristine output of the RNP. --Ethan |
