To upgrade or not to upgrade ? HD3 & Mac

Hi guys,

Its been a while sice i've done my last upgrade.
I got a G5 2.5 HD3accel pci e
And I want to move to a 3.2 8 core and HD3 accel pci x

It looks like the upgrade would cost around £7k

Is it worth it ?

Or should i wait for the new macs to come ?

They might change the pci bus again ...

Cheers

Mac

The newest Mac Pros have PCIe busses so there would be no need to change your HD cards.

The 2009 Mac Pros are supposed to have the new Intel chips but I don't think there's been any talk (so far) of changing from PCIe to anything else.

It might be worth waiting for the new Mac Pros because either a. You can get more power for the same amount of money, or b. You can get a better deal on a current-gen Mac Pro.

use a chassis. Yu can pick up the old Avid ones that work very well for peanuts and put the $180 PCIx to PCIe card in and bingo, you're away.

PCI-e specs were out years before it was actually implemented, i havnt seen anything new in the works and pci has been around a good 12+ years so you can be sure PCIe wont be going anywhere or some time.

digidesign will come out with something new before the bus standard changes.

as to an upgrade, why do you feel you need to?
has your work changed? or are you use more/different tools?
if your doing the same work you always have then i cant see why particularly if your running most of your processing on the HD cards.
