Beatmaker is an awesome sampler/groove editor etc that has a lot of possibilities including recording your own samples/importing samples, and also low latency pads for creating beats or playing live. Bloom, brian eno ambient awesomeness. But the newest awesomest underpriced piece of kit is gigbaby, which is a 4 track recorder complete with metronome and drum patterns, for 99c. Works perfectly. |

gigbaby sounds interesting (and it has a set list manager in it!) but the only review I see for it on itunes is in italian and gives it one star.. (most reviews aren't in english for me cos I'm login in from switzerland at the moment). still 99c is worth the risk narco

I dig Gigbaby, though the Drum Machine is pretty much useless to me. But that's just how I feel. I also love the VNC client. I can't remember what the name is but I use it with Pure VNC on my studio desktop as a remote Pro Tools transport controller.

"Useful" iPhone apps are still few and far between, most being entertainment.

I've been a bit obsessed with all of the new music apps. Similar programs have been out in the past, but mousing around never worked for me - the touch interface makes it all work nicely. For instant gratification and nice sounds: PaklSound - 99cents - this is my favorite iKoto - 'traditional' japanese instrument - easy to play and sounds nice miniSynth - some nice sounds! iDrum - very cool use of the touch interface and "swiping" Ocarina - the instrument is OK, but the ability to hear in real time other users playing all ovr the world is just 'off the hook' friggin amazing! iTM Midi Lab - FREE - amazing - worked right away to play soft synths within logic PocketGuitar - prett darn cool - you can actually "bend" strings and the iphone accelerometer works like a whammy bar Noise Trio - FREE - get it, cool sounds If you want to dig deep... BeatMaker... it is amazingly functional and the included sample sets are very good I suggest hooking your iPhone up to a good set of headphones or monitors to hear the sounds properly. lD |

| Yeah, the sound making apps are very cool, and it may usher in a new way of music making. RE, gig baby, I think the patterns are way cool enough to lay down your ideas to. This is the absolute fastest way to get an idea recorded before the inspiration is gone, which makes it very far from being considered a toy. |

Been playing around with most of the audio and midi apps for the iPhone, I´m impressed, especially with the MIDI control apps, the touch and motion detection interfaces are amazing for sound control. I´d like to see midi controller manufacturers creating bigger versions of this kind of interface. anyway, for midi control besides the already mentioned touchmidi, OSCemote is the shit. Totaly programable via OSCulator, this one makes full use of the iphone interface. very nice. as far as soundmaking apps go, there´s a few good ones already mentioned, my favorite, and try it before you judge, is Real Bongos, it´s instantly playable, and you can almost play it like the real thing. kind of similar is HangDrum, with a more melodic twist. If you want to see a perfect emulation (if you use a stylus it´s exactly like the real thing) try out iStylophone. I get the feeling that a lot of usefull apps could be made for music and audio on the iphone. |

I personally can't wait until the Cubase 5 app comes out. It gives you transport and other controls on your iPhone for Cubase 5... sadly, I haven't heard any other news from it since Steinberg announced it in Jan. I also have the guitar tool kit which is awesome. |

A new 16-track recorder "MultiTrack" by Harmonicdog is very good - simple and basic but very low latency, excellent sound quality and very stable, with the ability to import and export audio... Have a look at MultiTrack by Harmonicdog This works well with Beatmaker - you can get a drum track going in beatmaker then import it into multitrack (via your desktop), to record over. I've currently got an enthusiastic audio engineer working on building a guitar input adapter for the iphone... see how that works out... |

I got a little mic for my iPod Touch, but I can't seem to find anything inexpensive that will let me record a rehearsal for example

Its gonna be cool? I saw screenshots of the next version which feature delay and a synth integrated. Right now it's very buggy, the tracks fall out of time when you overdub and apparently it crashes. Btw there is also a 16 track in the store that's apparently very stable with less features.
