Thread Starter | Hard disk partition
I've bought an external hard disk to make location recordings in different studios. I've installed Mac OS 10.3, with Cubase SX3 on it. I'haven't made a partition; -Will it be ok to use as a recording drive, on the same volume as the system and application, or should I do it again and make a partition. I'll be doing drums multitracking. Thanks |

i'm pc. but you should find that the same is true on a mac. just run a test if you dont believe me. its always best if possible to seperate the operating system and its files onto its own drive and your audio tracks onto a seperate drive. the reason for this is called DISK CONTENTION. if you put EVERYTHING (OS plus tracks) to one hard drive then the OS might be making "calls" to the hard drive while "calls" are also being made to the tracks on the hard drive. I'm a comp engr - but will try and explain it like this. Think simplistically of a record player. While one person is playing a record its difficult of course for anyone else to play a record of course. thus on any daw i install i always make sure there are two drives. One for the OS and one for the tracks. Better performance this way. Thus allowing the OS to do its own thing without any possibility of interfering with track laying. The other advantage of this is back ups. If everythings (OS + apps + tracks) are on one drive and the one drive goes down...your in serious trouble. hope this helps. |
