If they didn't know note names, fret numbers, or just visual cues. The point is that none of those people would need a software to figure out the key.

And what they were doing was theory. They didn't invent any harmonic or melodic devices. THey merely had a different way to encode the information. A very unorganized inefficient way. But it was enough for the music they did. It wasn't like they were composing symphonies where they would of been a little lost. They had a system. Call it what you want but it is no different than "music theory"

you don't really get the concept of the context in which it's being used in this thread. I don't have the patience to dumb it down for you but you're actually proving my point that one doesn't have to know theory to make music, thanks.

music theory is a system of representation. Just because you use a different system does not make it different. This is rather self evident. Music theory which is just a name for western tonal theory is one way to describe music. A good way. A very efficient way but what you are doing, and everyone else is the exact same. Call it what you want, it is the same process as music theory. Except you are trying to reinvent the wheel. WHat you learn in a lifetime regarding music could be learnt in about 2 years using more effective ways of representing music especially when you are making the kind of music that fits western traditions like a sock.

It is possible that your knowledge of music and how to describe it is rather poor that these concepts are not self evident. They are to most.

And a 3 minute search on google clearly points out how both the drummer and the guitarist of van halen played piano. Pretty sure they could read music. But that doesn't sound very rock and roll.

Yeah sooo harsh aye...........In regular tuning the thick string[the one closer to your head......depending on where it may be at the time you decide to check] is "E" but if you use drop "D"[A.I.CH.:"We Die Young"/"Them Bones] it's "D".

nice condescending reply but I didn't say harsh replies, I said dick replies, and there's a difference.

I know how to tune and use alternate tunings, but what key is 'we die young' and 'Them Bones' in?

No diff down ere.........., Song 1. Db Song 2.Db [due to "half step" detuning] Pentatonic, unless we get into relative minor/major et al,but D pentatonic to me,due to after detuning a 1/2 step[one fret]your looking at "D shape positions",but Db to an A440 pitch. To be tedious,Ab "Phrygian" [or again, to "look at"]and again "to me",A Phrygian, modes can be used when soloing,or singing. PS "a lot of dick" pretty harsh, lol.
