How do i create my own virtual instrument from samples?

Im not a big fan of the modern day virtual instrument sound. most sound almost too clean and synthetic to me.

what i would love to do would be too sample some old keyboard or bass hits of funk and reggae records and create my own virtual instrument.

The problem when you do this manually is that you have to make several copies of the note and pitch them up and down. They become shorter or longer depending on the tuning. This means they requiring time stretching and further tweaking which takes alot of time.

I know their are programs out there that take sample hits and map them out on a keyboard melodically but can anyone reccomend any decent ones more suited to what i am trying to achieve.

many thanks

I have had some good results using NNXT from reason or kontakt. Both would work for what you are trying to do. You can always sample each note and map it out just the way you want with each note coming from a different sample. (opps my bad just realized you want to sample from a record not a live instrument, dont know if that would work out the way you want, sorry couldnt be more help)

You can use Extreme Sample Converter than has a "hardware converter" bit that automatically samples and creates sampler patches from external MIDI devices.

Also, a sampler like Kontakt (I'm sure the rest too) have different audio engine settings to avoid the going faster as you pitch up and vice versa.

Don't know about turning them into a standalone VSTi though.
