Logic 8 quantize... HELP!!!!

I'm recording a pretty heavy band for this project. The drummer does lots of double kick fills, but after a closer look, most of them are fairly sloppy (not spaced evenly and often not with click). I'd really like to quantze the kick to tighten the double kick thus tighten the song.. How do I go about doing this? Someone told me to use "strip silence" but I can't seem to find anything like that in my Logic 8 manual.... Any ideas?

Thanksin advanced.
Corey

Hi Corey

You probably know this but if you need to quantise the kicks you'll need to quantise all the drums by the same amount. Otherwise you'll run into phase problems.

The best methodology I've seen for quantising drums in Logic was written by Gearslutz own Rufuss Sewell.

This is from his post at Sonikmatter

I hope nobody minds me posting this here.

Here's a more detailed step by step of the entire process:

1. Pack your drum tracks into a folder (this is very important for the well being of the other tracks in the song.) Select all of the drum tracks and choose region>folders>Pack Folder.

2. Now double click on the new folder to reveal your drum tracks hiding inside.

3. Using the Marquee tool (the one that looks like a +) click and drag to select whatever tracks you want to use for transient detection (kick and snare usually.) The right side should be past the right edge of the regions and the left side should be just before the first hit. On slower Macs you should only choose one track for detection as each additional track slows down the processor considerably.

3. Use the Key Command "Set Marquee Start to Previous/Next Transient." This key command is for moving the left edge of the selection. It will allow you to jump from one drum hit to the next very quickly. Kind of like "tab to transient" in Pro Tools.

4. Use the Key Command "Split Regions/Events by Locators." This cuts ALL of the tracks on the screen at the selection and keeps your selection for the next cut!!! So the tracks you highlight with the marquee tool determine which transients will be selected. To clarify, if you click and drag over the kick drum track... only kicks will be selected by the key command. Of course there will be bleed for other drums so often the selection will go to a snare or tom, but you can just click again to move past these and onto your real target. All tracks in the folder are cut without the need for edit groups regardless of what tracks are selected.

5. Quickly go through and cut at every kick and snare. You can even include toms and cymbals if you like.

6. Quantize by opening the Event Window. Select a group of regions with the same settings, like 1/8th notes or 1/4 notes, and go through the whole song until everything is perfectly on beat. Of course triplet will need to be dealt with differently as will various syncopations. Take care to do this part a few measures at a time as to not completely mess up the feel of the performance.

7. Select all of the regions. In the Region menu select "tie by length change." This will fill in the gaps between the newly sliced regions.

8. With ALL of the regions selected, grab the lower left corner of any region and drag it to the left slightly to create a nice overlap. Pay special attention to cover any doubled or flammed notes that might have appeared as a result of the drummer playing too early.

9. With all regions selected, set the crossfade in the upper left corner of the arrange page to about 15ms using the EqP setting.

10. With luck you're finished and have a super tight drum performance! But more likely than not you'll have a few flams or doubled notes to deal with. Listen back and deal with these one at a time. It shouldn't take more than just dragging the left edge of the region a bit to cover the flam. In some rare cases you may need to time stretch a region to get things to line up right.
Say thanks to Rufuss if this helps

James

No worries.

Just to reiterate that was written by a Gearslutz member who calls himself Rufuss Sewell.

I used to do basically the same way but he really refined it, for me at least !!

I am brilliant at copying and pasting though

Watch out!

This no longer works in Logic 8.0.2. Split at Region/Marquee does no longer split all audio tracks, but only selected tracks.

So they "broke" this feature by "fixing" the split feature !

I nearly went nuts today, and i thought what the hell was happening, when i stumbled across this.

There is a "workaround" with group coupling turning on and off all the time...
