Question is there a reason this native system is freaking out on cpu?

is there a reason this native system is freaking out on cpu and how can i improve performance....?

Running a MAC PRO QUAD 2.5 with 13 gig ram...

with apogee symphony system...

all is fine until i put kontakt 3 in on a multi running 8 instruments with plenty samples...

then computer started cracking up...

now i needed the symphony buffer on 32 as i need to record vocals ontop of this....

WHY and HOW CAN IMPROVE THIS PERFORMANCE?

only one of the CPU meters peaked!!!!

(in the end i had to print the parts and save the mulit for later if need be - while recording....)

Is it that Logic STILL can't actually make more use of a Quad than a Dual mac....? Not up on it, but that used to be the case.....

Or do you mean one of your four (that it DOES see...)?

Either way, just have a Guiness, chap! Here, here.....

Plugins rarely use more than one thread (Kontakt does'nt) so the obvious solution would be to run more instances of Kontakt to spread the load on more cores.

There are a couple of more possible issues. Though you said one core was overloading i thought i'd mention them anyways.
Do you load all samples into RAM or do you use disk streaming ? The HD could easily choke with to much samples streaming from the same HD.

In the past loading samples as 32 bit float took quite a bit of load off the CPU but i don't know if that's still the case. It's mostly bound by RAM/FSB speed nowadays i believe.

details on your drive your loading samples from would help.
is it the same drive as the mac os resides on ??
you cerrtainly have plenty of ram.
if your loading samples from the same drive as the mac os is on...
you might try a test. use a seperate drive with a fat cache of 32mb for the samples.
ie..borrow a drive somewhere. approved for mac o' course.

Samples all load from a samples library drive - an internal 750 gig 7200rpm drive - not the same as system drive....

maybe i need to run all the samples in sampler mode on kontakt liike previously suggested (thanks Jupiter 8! valid point! :o ) - ithink i may have been disk streaming it! :o

generally though the native system doesnt seem quiet up to speed with a dsp one as of yet?

however we use logic - so maybe need a tools right for recording and a logic rig for writing and sync em up?

anythoughts on this idea?
