Thread Starter | OS 9 Music Programs While I currently run Live 7 on a PowerBook, I am considering supplementing my set up with a PowerPC running OS 9. The PowerPC interested me because it all ready has built-in phono ins and outs, so I wouldn't have to worry about the hassle of finding a non-usb/firewire soundcard, it's lying around my house and I thought instead of throwing it away I'd put it to use. I am curious about finding cool music programs for OS 9, essentially I want to use the computer as an instrument/sound source, I am not planning on dealing with MIDI syncing really just sound generation and manipulation. Looking for pointers... thanks |

| Pro Tools 5.1 is a great OS9 audio program. You can pick up an AudioMediaIII card for $10 or get a Digi001 for $150ish on craigslist and have a nice, stable system.

| I keep an OS 9 install for Prosoniq's SonicWORX Last call to Download for free here: Last Call for Downloading sonicWORX for MacOS 9/Classic - Prosoniq Products Software Stephen Bernsee is a DSP Guru. He cooked some amazing FFT and granular treatments for this app. SonicWORX is a wave editor and much of it isn't realtime, so for practical use, you're likely to network the OS 9 machine to your modern system and just shuttle files around. Definitely worth checking out. HtH, Tessib Ynohtna |

| Glad to see I'm not the only person who has a machine dedicated to OS9 music apps. I have a G3 on the LAN which I access with VNC. There is no keyboard, mouse or monitor connected. The G3's screen comes up in a window on my Leopard Mac and I use this Mac's keyboard and mouse to drive it. Like Tessib above, I am a big SonicWorx user. This program has some nifty spectral manipulation tools, and the Telephone Line Simulator is really cool (check out the "Overseas Line" patch) Sonicworx is only one of the programs I use on this machine, I still run Logic 3.1 on it to make use of all the incredible OS9 VST's that were the hallmark of that era and didn't make it over to OSX. Also Alchemy, Metasynth, Sound Designer (believe it or not, it still has a few uses), and there are others that I am forgetting. If I were in your shoes however, Alfador, I don't think I would bother with an OS9 machine at this point in time. OSX is seeing it's own rennaissance of free plugins, like the SmartElectronix stuff and Michael Norris' Spectral suite of applications that are more advanced than what was available in OS9. Plus, if you're not already familiar with OS9 you'll have to go through all the hassle of learning now to network it to Leopard (not hard, but it will take some time to get the hang of) and if you want to use VNC you will spend a considerable amount of hours getting that to work reliably, and you still have to hunt down all the OS9 software (it took me eons to find an OS9 release of VNC), so you have to weigh wether time spent here is worth it, or would your time be better spent learning how to use an OSX app that has portability with your setup/Ableton Live rig. In summary: I wouldn't bother with an OS9 machine at this point if I was not already a diehard OS9 user. But as a diehard OS9 user, I wouldn't part with my OS9 machine. |

Thread Starter | thanks for the advice, I just downloaded sonicworx and i'll check that out soon. I don't think that i'll be setting up VNC or interfacing my os x machine with the other computer. I'll probably just mainpulate osme samples before I output them to a hardware sampler then back into live or something such as that, just trying to find some interesting 'ghettoer' DSP. Thanks for the response. |

| Could you tell me what applications you use for VNC? I also have a G3 I'd like to incorporate that way. |
