Tiger to Leopard

So the time has come to make the leap - The arrival of a Mac Pro is imminent and I'm going to be diving into the depths of chaos - Basically I'm moving all my stuff to Leotard from Tiger to include :-

Logic Pro 8.0.2
Pro Tools LE 7.4
Waves SSL & Plat V 6
Komplete 4
Reason 4

and a host of other plug ins....

Any other guys taking the plunge, or experience of the same

Leopard: I'm Mac-Lovin' It...

I'm not sure Komplete 4 is going to work for you, but the rest looks good. Make sure to check OSX 10.5 compatibility of all your plugs and get the latest versions.

Hello,
What platform are you moving from? I ask because if it's a PPC then you perhaps may not want to do the Migration Assistant.
When I moved from PPC to Intel the Migration Assistant transferred everything over dutifully. Unfortunately this included system kexts and other PPC specific items that shouldn't have gone, and Migration Assistant doesn't allow enough specificity in what gets transferred.

Since you are using this machine for audio I personally recommend starting from scratch, building up your apps by installing each and every one. For many of them this will entail getting new Intel compatible versions as you don't want any PPC-only apps or plugs unless you have to have them. Starting from scratch also has the advantage of clearing out old things you installed and don't use anymore.

Just an opinion if you're willing to take the time, it will lead to a faster more stable system.

Question

Hey, good luck!

I'll be watching your transition.

I've been contemplating migrating from Tiger to Leopard (I have Leopard on another internal HD) but it all just seems like to much of a brain-strain for me, and Tiger is fine, but maybe PT8.0 will be Leopard only...

Have you got a plan? Like:

1. Install this first
2. Install this second
3. Perform this third
4. etc.
5. etc.

Maybe others can chime in

I just moved from Tiger to Leopard. No real problems so far, though I'm still installing some stuff and obviously haven't tested everything fully in a working environment. (I'm also using Logic 8.02 fwiw).

I will say that Leopard is a fantastic operating system, I'm really enjoying the improvements.

I made the switch yesterday. Haven't had much chance to really push things
but so far SSL bundle in Logic 8.02 ROCKS SOLID on Core Duo Macbook
2.0, 2 gig RAM, 200 gig 7200 internal drive.

I did a fresh install on a brand new drive.

So mid transition (Ithink(

Well so far I have loaded with no (or little) problem on to Leopard 10.5.5

Pro Tools LE 7.4.2 with MPTK
Reason 4
IK Multimedia CSR & T-Racks
Soundtoys Native v3
Amplitube
Recylce
Toast 8
Melodyne 3.2 - full program and plug in (the installer for the full program claimed failure but it still seemd to work)
Camel audio Phat and Space

It's still taken most of the day to get to this point and still to come

Waves Platinum & SSL 4000 (Installed but waiting on Waves access to ilok.com )
Komplete 4 ()

also Flash, Dreamweaver and a lot of other software

DO THIS.

» Change Leopard Dock to 2D » Silver Mac

oh how I hated that 3d dock...

Yeh I had leopard on my lovely new macbook when I got it few months back... back when Pro Tools WASN'T COMPATIBLE!!!! oh the pain...

All good now though. Mind that Digi haven't certified 10.5.5 yet, but I wouldn't anticipate huge problems with that anyway.

I want to go to leopard too, but the thought of any down-time due to the switch is scaring me off. Any success stories of switching from Tiger to Leopard on a mac pro with Pro Tools HD??

Everything I mentioned in this thread I have managed to install on Leopard and on first test is working perfectly. Including Komplete 4. Going to Leopard was only as much hassle as upgrading my computer with the same OS in reality...

I am having similar concerns. Been on a couple macpro's with Leopard and was very unimpressed with leopard in general. The finder seems sluggish and melodyne seemed to be uncooperative with many crashes. Not looking for individual solutions, just confirmation that melodyne will work fine with leopard and protools on a macpro 2.66 with 10GB memory.

Works great here, including Melodyne. Was running PT 7.4.2 for a long time, now PT8. Still rock solid. MacPro 8-core 2.8GHz 8 GB RAM.

Wow - I'm going to try almost the identical upgrade right now. I have a quad mac pro, with PT LE 7.4, Reason 4 and Komplete 4.

Glad to hear your upgrade is going smoothly. Please post if you have any hiccups. I'll do the same.

I'm a little worried about the Native Instruments stuff. I'm contemplating on moving to Komplete 5, mostly just to get the latest versions of Kontakt and Guitar Rig. I want those to run smoothly.

Cheers
Adam

All good here.

Clean install to Quad 2.66 2GB.

New drive. PT8. No dramas.

No 3rd party plugs though - haven't got that far yet.

How about migration of user data and applications? Did you use the migration assistant, during install or afterwards? Did you copy application folders or reinstall one at a time?

Cheers
