Do Plugins age like computer hardware?

I just purchased a Digi 003 system and want to start purchasing some of the plugins I have been used to using on an HD rig at work for years. Things like MCDSP Compressor Bank for example. It occurred to me that Compressor Bank has been around a while and like anything in the computer world things evolve like the speed of light. Is the new ML4000 vastly superior to compressor bank albeit a different product? Was the technology that was around when it was developed highly inferior to what's out today? Does it not matter because it's all in the design and how it's implemented? It's weird because most of the plugins I like are just emulating great hardware pieces, and I don't think the plugin versions will maintain a vintage cult status like their hardware counterparts. Just some random thoughts here.

I think there are a few plugins that have achieved cult status.

Lexiverb is definitely one of those plugins.
To this day there are people who wish it were available for the HD system.
There are some people who keep the mix system around just for the Lexiverb.

In years to come the Studio Classics from Waves will have that status.
