| Internal 2nd Hard Drive for Running Audio Hello guys! I'd be so happy if any of you could help me with this one! I'm thinking of buying a second internal drive for my G5 as I got the feeling that my LaCie FW is going to let me down soon. I got an album and an EP on the go that I can't really risk! The problem is: I don't really know what hard drive to buy because I'm not sure about a few things, such as: - What brand is good? someone said to me that Seagate has gone a bit dodgy . Maxtor any good? Any other quality brands out there? - Size matters? Obviously the bigger - the better for me (as I got loads of stuff) but I was wondering if the bigger the drive, the slower it gets or not good for audio etc. Is it really relevant? - I heard 8Mb cache drives rock. True? better for audio? anything better than 8Mb? - RPM's. 7200 or faster? I got a dual 2 gig G5 and I have heard that they despise heat. So the faster the drive the hotter things get - G5 gets annoyed. (?) - Where to buy? any good places to get hold of a drive for a decent price in the U.K? I'd appreciate any links, comments, help, swearing... anything Gomez |

| Gomez, I have a Maxtor in my dual 1.25 G4 that has served me well for a few years. It's a 7200, 120 gig. 8mb cache. Partitioned in two. I use it for the session files. For some reason, I don't trust a firewire drive for an active session, I just use mine for backups and transfering files. Never had a problem with it, I just feel more secure using a drive installed in the computer. Never heard about Seagate being dodgy, if that is the case, who else is there? I bought mine at Comp USA, any big computer store should do. I'm not an expert, so take this all with a grain of salt.

| Hi all. Thanks for the info so far! I truly appreciate it! Quote:
hociman: I heard the Seagate thing from a guy I met few weeks ago. He works for an audio dealer that sales Macs (amongst other things) and provides support for them. He is actually one of the Mac support guys (and unfortunately I have not been able to contact him) and he said that he was getting loads of calls regarding problems with recent Seagate drives. He also recommended me not to get something faster than 7200 RPM's for dual processor G5's. The faster the drive- the hotter they get. Apparently, dual G5's have an issue with heat. But then again I don't know! Anyway. I'm still wondering if the capacity matters. My FW drive is 160 gig and it has given me hell. I have de-fragged it a few times but I keep on wondering: if it was half the size - would it work faster? that seem fairly logical to me but as you can tell I'n not an expert. Anyway... Where do you guys buy your drives then? Any highly competitive prices in the U.K.'s computer market? Thanks very much for the replies! | |
