Playing (5.1) Surround DVDs through Core Audio

Is it possible to play surround DVDs through core audio? I have an hd system for the mac in question.
In core audio all HD systems show up as 8 ch io. Technically, there is enough IO to make it happen, but I cannot find any info on using PT HD core audio as a surround device.
Any info is helpful...

Commercial 5.1 DVDs? Try the VLC player.

VLC media player for Mac OS X

Use the Apple Audio MIDI setup app (in Utilities folder) to set up your connections. If you already setup the mac to play Quicktime 5.1 files you might already be good to go.

I wish the Apple DVD player could do this naturally, but it can't decode Dolby 5.1 due to licensing restrictions.

6strings,
I could not get this to work. In the audio preferences in the VLC there is only L and R. i do not see all 6 channels available.
I am on a PT HD accel system if that matters.
Thanks for the input.
