I myself have been using the new Sony Oxford Reverb plugin for the past few weeks with much success on a few new mixes. It's a traditional style verb with lots of control over parameters. It's not a convolution style. I really like it so far. thumbsup Unfortunatelly, it's probably the most expensive one though. Check out the demo.

The Princeton 2016 is a good verb IMO, but I mainly use TL Space + outboard.

Reverb One is pretty old now and doesnt compete with the newer plugins. Revibe and TL Space are the two high end Pro Tools reverbs I use extensively.

If you are on a LE system or on a tight budget, look at Altiverb or the Princeton reverb plugin.

hi,

You should try the H8000 Reverb (Anthology bundle), it's quite good . The demo is fully functionnal for 30 days which is great .

I also like Revibe and TL Space .

I would seriously consider getting an outboard digital reverb and connect it via ADAT or AES/EBU. It'll work perfectly integrated in your system and won't take up any CPU/chip power whatsoever.

Get a used TC Electronic M3000 (great reverb), I got one for only $400 (mind you they're around $2000 new). It has two independent reverbs, so you're getting two HQ reverbs.

I have 4 busses of TC reverbs (M3000 + M-One XL) setup this way, and it works great. I haven't heard any software reverbs except maybe Logic's SpaceDesigner that I found remotely useful.

When you turn the M6000 on it says "loading windows XP" . Basically a lot of the new digital reverbs are software reverbs .

And you should give a listen to the new ones on PT HD cause there's been a great improvement in the past months .

As for me I'd rather buy more Accel cards than a boxed digital reverb . The cards serve other purposes as well as the reverbs .

ReVibe is excellent for general purpose / clear verbs...

Waves RenVerb for mucky colored verb now and then...

Nothing else really does it for me in PT nowadays. Haven't used Reverb One since ReVibe showed up. Sometimes use Waves TrueVerb for making reverse verbs and making effects in Audisuite.

Want to try Oxford soon...

Yes you are correct that reverbs today have a software structure.

However, you are missing one very important point: The proprietary hardware and software in hardware processors enables a no-cut corners implementation without resorting to DSP saving algorithms and nasty internal truncations, and often higher internal resolution than the DAW.

There is no soft verb that can compete with a good piece of hardware, plus the software verbs are so heavy on DSP usage. Not worth it yet. Get a pcm 80 or something like that.

The M3000 and TC6000 are 24 bit reverbs according to TC's website. If you look at the hardware in the TC 6000 it is actually just a very slow PC running Windows NT with four DSP chips that date back to 1999. For $8000!

New Pro Tools reverbs like Eventide, Revibe and TL Space are 24 and 32 bit reverbs, and they are running on more modern hardware than the TC6000. You could buy each of these reverbs plus an HD Accel card and have cash left over. You get an equivalent or better sound (IMHO), much better integration with Pro Tools, and you can use all that DSP for something else when you don't need more reverb.

Have you actually listened and compared the outboard TC reverbs to e.g. the Revibe or TL Space? I think that would end the discussion :-) Cheers

It shouldn't end it, because the question was which reverb PLUG IN is everyone using.

PS - I think it's clear that most people agree that hardware verbs are better than software verbs.

I'm a big Altiverb fan, and Altiverb 5 is coming soon. Seems like an interesting upgrade.
(you can check it out at www.audioease.com)

Cheers, Julian

PS I love the EMT140 sampled by Wendy Carlos !

In order of importance imho

- Eventide ........ awesome .... simply awesome. I realy realy LOVE this reverb. the only HIGH END reverb plugin that deserves not to be a plugin for whatever that may mean.

- Revibe
- Reverb One

I don't like the convolution stuff .... none of it to be honest.

Are you speaking of the 2016 or the Eventide verb?

Here's a very little comparison between the Altiverb and the TL.
First, there's the dry SN, second is Altiverb, third is TLspace.

In the Quantec Example First is the TL with the Room Simulator Empty Hall Algo, second is Altiverb Yardstick, third is my original Yardstick, connected digital.

I find it's easy to get a bad reverb sound on any unit soft or hard if you play around with them too much, take them far away from the original program, except for sound design of course. I had the sony demo and I had trouble getting good sounds from scratch and the demo didn't come with a mountain of presets so I'm not buying until I'm rich.

re: Best sounding reverb for protools hd?

I love TL Space. Some people say they don't like convolution reverbs...but I wonder if they have really tried it. Not only does convolution reverb offer real plate, chamber, halls, etc samples, but it also offers samples of high end hardware units. Realistically, one digital reverb like Reverb One or a PCM 80 is not going to have enough flexibility for every mixing situation. But TL Space has so many different samples, it is like having a studio full of various reverbs.
