Different uses for Distressors and/or Fatso

I am the proud owner of 2 Distressor EL8-x's and I just recently bought a Fatso Jr. I am currently mixing ITB, and was curious as to how others in my situation utilize their Empirical Labs stuff. I currently run bass out of PT thru a Distressor and back in, with great results. I have been playing around with the Fatso on the stereo drum mix, so far with pretty good results, but I can't help but wonder if there is a better way. Maybe both Distressors on the stereo drum mix, with the Fatso Jr. on the stereo bus?? What do you guys think?

Fatso on stereo bus

Hmm. Using the Fatso on the stereo bus...what settings on the Fatso are you using? (i.e. what number warmth, and what comp setting?)

I don't like it alot on the stereo buss, but I love the Fatso on the drums during mixing. I run a stereo sub of the close mics to the Fatso on Buss, Input hot (6 or 7) and Tranny on. I bring it up along with the uncompressed drums and mix them. Make adjustments for latency.

I have tried various methods, including the one you spoke of, but never felt that I got everything perfectly back in phase when combining the compressed (bussed)tracks with the original. It sounded good, but with delay compensation, I was never sure it was exactly right. Anyone have any tips to help ensure that things are still aligned correctly after bussing outboard and combining the result with the original tracks?? Does anyone use the hardware setup utility (PT) that allows you to compensate for hardware delay by setting a value (in milliseconds)? I just want to be sure that everything is perfectly aligned, and not have to trust my ears alone to determine that. Any tips would be greatly appreciated (i.e. is there a formula I need to know??). Thanks!

The easiest way is to send out 2 stereo busses. Send one pair to the Compressor and return to PT. Send other pair out and return to PT without processing. Now you are positive the same delay is on both pairs.

I sent old track out to the fatso and back into Pro Tools, although you do add another stage of conversion. Sometimes, however, it sounds better. What is the hardware setup utility you're speaking of? I've never really used the fatso on a drum sub because, to me, it's meant printing a new stereo track for the compressed drums and timeshifting (because of the phase)..

Sometimes I warm up my outboard reverb with the fatso as I'm sending back into Pro Tools (and printing/timeshifting it).
